    3. Hi, I need some assistance with finding a birth certificate for my father. I contacted the Vital Registration in Charleston W.Va. to obtain a birth certificate for both my mother and father. My mother was born in Scarbro, W.Va. under the name of Evelyn Gertrude Dixon, and my father was born in Huntington, W.Va under the name of Ellsworth James Bowles. Vital Registration had my mothers but not my dads, should I contact the Cabell County Courthouse for my dads, and if so does anyone know the number that I can reach them at, and what department I should talk to? Thanks, Mike Bowles

    1. [WVA] DAWSONs in Monongalia Co, VA land records
    2. Brenda Hébert
    3. Hi! In researching my Thomas DAWSON b. 22 May 1790 in Monongalia (Monongahela) Co, I found the following web site from the Library of Virginia with early land records on it (64 DAWSON records): http://198.17.62.51/collections/LO.html When you look through the index, you will be shown photos of typewritten index cards on the web page (that is the information I've typed below), and when you click on "Retrieve Doc." you can see a TIFF file of the actual land document. This is what I found as far as DAWSONs in Monongalia Co. Charles DAWSON 15 Jun 1784 Monongalia Co. 326 acres. On the waters of Monongalia River called the Flaggy Meadow run. Thomas DAWSON 15 Jun 1784 Monongalia Co. 307 3/4 acres. On the waters of Scotts Mill run adjoining lands of William DAWSON including his settlement made in the year 1774. William DAWSON 20 Nov 1784 Monongalia Co. 225 acres. On the headwaters of Scotts Mill run including his settlement made in the year 1774. Thomas DAWSON 24 Sep 1787 Monongalia Co. 190 acres. On the waters of Scotts Meadow run adjoining a certain run next to BARKERs field being the division line between said and land granted John DENT and including his Settlement made in 1773. William DAWSON Jun. 8 Mar 1798 Monongalia Co. 100 acres. On Scotts run adjoining land of John SHIVELY, William DAWSON, and David WATKINS. >From those records, I have come to the conclusion that they are all related. More than likely William is William Jun's father (I think that's the safest assumption). The two Thomases are either one and the same, or they are two different Thomases. I was thinking they were the same person, that the second record has his settlement year wrong -- but I could be wrong. I also draw the conclusion that Thomas and William Sen. are brothers (or at the least first cousins) because they settled the same year. Also, Thomas is more than likely related to Charles because they filed on the same day -- they could be brothers -- or because Charles' doesn't mention settling in 1774, maybe Charles is a son of Thomas? Well, what do you think? Anyone have anything to add? Does anyone connect? Brenda Hébert

    2. The Jefferson County Courthouse has birth records - I'm not sure how far back they go. I have done research there and I,ve gone back to 1880, but I know there are records before tthat date. Also, the local cemeteries have a wealth of information on birth and death dates. If you know the graveyard, I can check for you - if you do not live in the area. Susan

    1. [WVA] COOPER
    2. I am researching the family of Dr. Francis W. Cooper of Reedy (Roane Co.?), its first resident physician (1887). Is he familiar to you? What I have is from the History of Roane County by William Bishop: Dr. Francis Cooper came to "Three Forks" about the year 1887, from upper Meigs County, Ohio, near Athens.....He was thrice married. First to a Miss Spicer, who died. Next with Miss Malissa Stewart at Reedy, July 14, 1869--she a daughter of Joseph Stewart, son of the pioneer, William STEWART. Third was Miss Pruda Boice, daughter of a family of that name, resident of Seaman Fork, of Reedy. They made their home at a crossroads at the head of upper Left Reedy, which the doctor facetiously named "Windyville." Is this familiar to anyone?? I'm trying to find which wife was mother to Kista Metta COOPER, my husband's great grandmother? Any information on the other wives would be interesting, too. Thanks, Maureen

Jean >> Another approach is to try and find them on a later census, say about 1830 or 40 and try and work backward into families with the same surname and see when a young male showed up between 1800 and 1810. Not too precise, I realize. But it could be an aid with some other corroborating information such as the forementioned military pension records, etc which might show parents, spouse, etc. luck, Mike

Jean >> Jean, According to "The Handy Book for Genealogists," the Jefferson county clerk has birth and death records from 1853 (except for the Civil War years); marriage, probate, wills, and land records from 1801. Births weren't required by law to be recorded until, I believe, about 1917; however, most counties in WV still didn't really follow that law until well after the 1920s. You'll probably have to depend either on a family Bible record (if one exists) for the birth date, or either a marriage record or a death record. Of course not all marriage records or death records listed birth dates, but sometimes you get lucky. You might even just have to rely on tombstone dates, if your ancestor was fortunate enough to have a tombstone and not just a grave marked by fieldstone. If the person served in the military (War of 1812, Civil War, WW I, etc.) you may be able to obtain their military records and, again if you're lucky, their birth date may be listed somewhere in the military record or pension record. Good luck in your search, Neva
