    1. Re: [WVA] HALLIGAN /REYNOLDS marriage look-up
    2. Les Shockey
    3. This marriage for Thomas HALLIGAN to a Alice REYNOLDS does not appear in the state vital records. Some possible reasons. There are a few counties where the records for the time period 1849-1850 are missing. See those that are available at: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_mcsearch.aspx Are you sure of the exact spelling that was used at that time. Records could have been destroyed during the Civil War or by fire or water damage at a courthouse. Les

    1. [WVA] Press Release - Palatines To America, German Genealogy Society Forms NC Chapter
    2. Palatines To America German Genealogy Society NC Chapter
    3. Hi West Virginia Mailing List Co-Ordinators, Please forward the message below to your County Rootsweb lists as there many people all over the South who are of German descent. Many Thanks, David French, NC PalAm Publicity Director FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Release - Palatines To America, German Genealogy Society Forms NC Chapter RALEIGH, NC (September 22, 2011) - Would you like to learn more about your German ancestors? A group of people from all across the state have come together to form a North Carolina Chapter of the Palatines To America, German Genealogy Society. It is open to all who are of German descent or who have an interest in German genealogy and history. The national Palatines To America organization was founded in 1975 in Columbus, Ohio and has seven state chapters and over 2,000 members. The national society publishes a quarterly journal, "The Palatine Immigrant", which focuses on research and a quarterly newsletter, "The Palatine Patter", which focuses on the activities of the national and state chapters. North Carolina has two areas that had significant German immigration during the 18th century: New Bern was founded by German Palatine and Swiss settlers in 1710, and the piedmont which had several German groups including the German Reformed, Lutherans, Moravians, and others who settled during the mid 1700s. In succeeding generations, many families of German descent traveled down one of three branches of the great wagon road from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and settled in the piedmont as well as others who settled along the coast coming from the coastal northeast. In the 1920s, a group of descendants of the New Bern German Palatines formed The North Carolina Society of the Descendants of the Palatines. Their group was active until the 1950s. During the last century, there have been many people of German descent who have moved to all parts of the state. The inaugural meeting of the North Carolina chapter will be Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Wake County Southeast Regional Library, 908 Seventh Avenue, Garner, NC 27529. The meeting will be held in a seminar format from 10:15 am to 3:15 pm. Three speakers will be featured: Mr. Jerry Miller, President of the Palatines To America NC Chapter who will make a presentation about the Palatines To America organization and conduct a short business meeting; Mr. Victor T. Jones, Jr., Special Collections Librarian at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library, Kellenberger Room, and President-Elect of the North Carolina Genealogical Society, will make a presentation about the “Early Settlers of New Bern", and Mrs. Bonnie Everhart, Past Chairman of the Palatines to America Immigrant Ancestor Register and former PalAm National Librarian and Historian, will make a presentation about “Researching the Holt Family Line Into North Carolina.” There will also be a panel discussion about the resources available to Palatines To America members by Mrs. Everhart, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Miller. The Inaugural Meeting/Fall seminar is open to the public with a $10.00 registration fee. Registrations at the door are fine, please call or email to confirm your attendance. 1. Re: [WVA] Obituaries for HARBULAK
    2. Nancy Edwards
    3. Attn: ludcon@charter.net I must have overlooked your original posting regarding your search for an obit for Harry Harbulak. I just saw a response on the WVA List from another poster (User399535@aol.com). You may have already checked the public library in Huntington, but if not, I did. They are indexing obits, but I didn't see your Harbulak listed. However, there is a notation that indicates to me that their index may not yet be complete, so it's possible an obit for him may be in the library. I've requested obits from this library more than once (before this index was online), and the staff has always been very helpful. If you don't have the library contact info, here it is: Cabell Co Public Library 455 9th Street Plaza Huntington, WV 25701 PH: 304-528-5700 In lookiing for your Harbulak in the Index, I first went to the main library page at this link: http://cabell.lib.wv.us/index.html - and then I clicked the Research/Reference tab at the top (almost the top) of this page, and in the drop down list, I clicked Genealogy which took me to this page: http://cabell.lib.wv.us/pages/aa-localhistory.html Once you're on that page, scroll down to the section "Collections and Materials", and you'll see "Obituary Indexing". Click that link and that will take you to the indexing page. As I said, even though I didn't see your Harry Harbulak listed, it's quite possible he's just not in the Index yet. I would suggest contacting the library for a lookup in the newspaper since you have a death date for him. You say he died 12/12/1979. The other poster had a different death date of 12 Nov 1979, and Nov 1979 is the death date listed on the SSDI at Ancestry. I also checked my copy of the booklet "Woodmere Cemetery", published by KYOWVA Genealogical Society, and both Harry J. and Grace E. are listed, and Harry's death date is recorded as 12 Nov 1979. Hope this helps. Good luck. Regards, Nancy Edwards - Georgia - Searching: EDWARDS, EATON, GARDNER, GILLETTE, MORRISON, and many others. 1. [WVA] Death records
    2. Doris Forsyth
    3. In my many years of family research I've found almost everyone I've looked and searched for-except one. She is so lost, "so gol' dern lost that I am not sure that even the good Lord could find her", as the old song goes. She was born to Capt. William Veirs and his first wife, Mary Magruder. Her father named her for HIS mother-her paternal grandmother. The grandmother was Dorotha Hanley Viers, so the baby girl was also named Dorotha Hanley Veirs. So, for a time there were two women with the same name. The grandmother was born a Hanley and married a Veirs. The baby girl was given the name of Dorotha Hanley at birth and her family name was Veirs. The young girl, Dorotha, eventually married Zephaniah Dyson and they had 4 children, one girl, Anna, and 3 boys. Over the years, and somewhere along the way Dorotha died-at least she was no longer a part of the life of Zephaniah Dyson. Zephaniah was a Rev War vet and I've tried to do a DAR entry on him. The fact that Zephaniah Dyson married a second time in 1811, when he no longer was a young man, and died 3 years later, is recorded information. What I am unable to find is what became of Zephaniah's first wife-Dorotha Veirs Dyson. Census records often recorded her as "Dorraty", since her name was NOT Dorothy, but one that was hard to spell correctly-Dorotha. DAR people say I have to find what became of Dorotha Veirs Dyson before I can put Zeph in their records. They have some very lame excuses. For a fee of $30, the DAR people searched their own records for evidence of her death and they didn't find anything, either. Since I don't give up easily, I keep trying on this-it's been 3 years-and still hope to find some evidence or records regarding the death of Dorotha Hanley Veirs Dyson-daughter of William and Mary Magruder Veirs. Their daughter, Anna, married David Reed in West Virginia or across the river in Ohio. This makes them my 5th gr. grandparents. Thoughts or suggestions for more searching would be appreciated. I've let this rest for almost a year and have hopes that something can be found regarding this missing lady. Doris Reed Forsyth
