I can see hers is Virginia, but I cannot make out what his is supposed to be. Allegedly, he was born in Maryland, but that conglomeration of letters does not look like MAryland. Carol, Just thought I would let you know that in the 1860 index they transcribed the birth state as Penn--I guess they couldn't make it out either and Pennsylvania was their best guess.
