    1. [WVCEN] Look up of book, not name
    2. I'm in Massachusetts, my husband is from West Virginia, and I am doing his family right now. The name is Ensign, and there have been 3 books (that I know of) on his family, starting with James Ensign & Sarah Elson in 1634. I have the first book, and have the third book on loan, I am desperatley searching for the second book. It was published privately so have had no luck in searching bookstores. Could someone, please search the library's in WV to see if maybe they have a copy. I am assuming that the name is either The Puritans James Ensign Book 2 of Ensign's in America book 2, or something like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Barbara Ensign

Thank you to everyone for your help. Carol Greathouse >> Carol, The census images have very little information on them in the early 1800's because most of the rural areas were sparsely populated. The best way to find the family's location is to look at a county platt map. If they owned property, it will show up on there. Sometimes you can get these maps from county Historical Societies. Here is a good way to find the County web site for any state and county: Go to: www.rootsweb.com At the top of the right column, under the heading WEB SITES, click on "Websites at rootsweb" On the next page click on the link for "United States of America" On the next page, scroll down the page to the list of states and click on the state you want. (Click West Virginia) On the next page, click on the county that you want. (Click Marshall) PRESTO!!! There you are!! Now, snoop around through all those links and see what you can find. There may be an e-mail address or snail mail address for a County Historical Society. Good Luck, Marilyn

    3. I am hoping someone will be able to help me a bit. My maternal great grandfather Lindsay/Lindsey E. SISSON was in WV in 1910. I just do not know where. He may have been in the Charleston area, or Winding Gulf, or East Gulf. I would sure appreciate it someone could look up on a census index and see if they can find him. He should be listed with his wife Adeline/Addelin, and one daughter Leola Carmelin (sometimes called Carmel), and a step-daughter Hallie. I tried looking on Ancestry.com, but this particular year has no index! I sure appreciate the help. Thanks again. Joyce Lucas Dever, near Seattle skipdever@earthlink.net

    3. Thank you Marilyn, Another kind soul has sent me the images. To the fact that Marshall Co. was Virginia in 1840, all I can say is Ooops, I knew that, brain was not in gear when fingers were on keyboard. Question, can anyone tell me where in the county a household was located by using the census information. Thank you to everyone for your help. 3. Good Morning List, I would appreciate a census for Harmon Greathouse, who would have been about 52 in 1840. His wife, Mary Ann, was about 50. The following are children, who should be on the census. Male (Thomas), about 19 Female (Mary Ann), about 16 Female (Sarah Ann), about 14 Male (Henry E), about 8 Other children, who I do not think are in this household on this census are, Harmon, Jr. about 36, John W. about 29, and James about 21. I thought that I would start with the 1840 census to track this Greathouse family back to when they first appear in Virginia. It would be a big help to know where this family was living, when I go thru the deed records. Thank you, Carol Greathouse Missouri, USA

In 1820 there is one DODD family in Amherst Co: Since only the head of household is listed in the index and on the census image, it will be difficult to narrow down William's father, but this is a possibility: Dodd, James View Image Online State: Virginia Year: 1820 County: Amherst Roll: M33_131 Township: Unknown Townships Page: 24 Image: 32 4100010011103 4 males under 10 1 male age 10-16 1 male age 45 & up 1 female age 16-26 1 female age 26-45 1 female age 45 & up 3 persons engaged in Agriculture Have you found William in later census records so you can establish his correct age?
