    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Dz.2ADEAE/58.2 Message Board Post: Piney View is a community in Raleigh County, WV. You could try writing to the Raleigh County Historical Society, P. O. Box 897, Skelton, WV 25919-0897. You can also try calling funeral homes in that area. You apparently do not have your grandfather's death record. You can request a search and obtain a copy of his state death certificate and an obituary through the WV Archives and History Library. Usually both will name the cemetery where buried. See our Web site at http://www.wvculture.org/history for complete information about sending a research letter. (We only accept regular mail requests.)

    2. Ronni
    3. Hello... In Violette Machir's book on Mason County cemetery inscriptions, vol. 1, (c) 1972, she lists a cemetery by the initials L.O.O.F. She then writes that it's in "Mason, WV on a high hill above Wahama High School to the right. Seldom used. Has been cleaned off and is now cared for by a committee." Anyone know what the initials stand for? Does Wahama High School still exist? Thank you, Ronni

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Dz.2ADEAE/55.1 Message Board Post: The West Virginia Archives and History Library does not have any McDowell County cemetery books, nor do we have a WPA survey of any McDowell County cemeteries. Only one appears on the West Virginia Union [Library] Catalog, a book by Pauline Haga which lists some veterans graves in the county. I suggest you write to the McDowell County Historical Society, P. O. Box 369, War, WV 24892, and/or locate an area funeral home using directory assistance for Welch. If you are successful in getting a geographic location, driving directions, or contact information for this cemetery, please post. I am collecting any information of this type for a file for our Library.

You already know more than most people who are hunting for a gravesite. I suggest you read the September 2000 issue of Archives and History News, the newsletter of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, Archives and History section. This issue features cemeteries, particularly information that applies to WV, and includes a synopsis of WV's cemetery access law that was passed around then. Williamson and Chattaroy are in Mingo County. I checked our WV Archives and History Library collection and found no cemetery books for Mingo County. Regarding Falls Branch, that does not appear to be the name of a recognized community in Mingo County, not now and not in the past. For local information, try writing to Mingo County Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 2581, Williamson, WV 25661-2581. Also, from the Williamson phone book (all area code 304): Chattaroy Church of God, 235-3005. Faith Church of God, 235-8505. Weaver Mortuary in Williamson, 235-2410. Lowes ! Mortuary in Williamson, 235-3300. Good luck! Susan Scouras, Librarian, WV Archives and History Library.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Dz.2ADEAE/54 Message Board Post: Looking for the Harris Cemetery in WV I was told the town is called Falls Branch it's located between Chattaroy and Williamson WV. It's located behind an old church once known as a Pentcostal and a Church Of Christ it's over railroad tracks and there are a group of houses also. It's right off Rt 52 and I think 119 crosses there too. Any help would be greatly appreciated as to who actually owns the land this cemetery is on. I'm wanting to get permisson to be able to go on it and to know where I go to get up to it. It sits on a hill and is overgrown with trees and such. My father Walter Layne and a uncle Ernest Layne is buried there. The years are 1955 and 1951. Thank you for any help...
