Good Morning, I am searching for a death date/burial place of my paternal great-grandfather, Charles H. (May also be W.) LUCAS. I can find him in the Parkersburg directories in 1910, then the next directory I have is 1913, where his wife Lottie (Charlotte) is listed as a widow. Charles was born in OH in 1866, exact location unknown. I do not know who his parents were for sure, but suspect a Charles Harrison LUCAS and Rebecca Jane MILHOAN may be his parents. I have contacted the 3 or 4 funeral homes that are still in business in Parkersburg, that were also in business then. No one can find a death cert or burial info on this very elusive man. Appreciate any tidbit of information! Happy Thanksgiving. Take care and be safe. Joyce LUCAS DEVER, near Seattle

I checked the following cemetery inventory books for you, with no luck: Cabell County Cemeteries, Volumes 1-3, by Carrie Eldridge; WPA cemetery survey records, and Cemetery Records of Cabell County, West Virginia, by the Buford Chapter, NSDAR.

There are no statewide lists or indexes for West Virginia deaths by name. You have to work with places, ideally the county location. If you do not know the location, find the family in the nearest census records, and check the records and cemetery inventory books (if any) for that county. You can also try writing to the local historical/genealogical society for that county. Addresses can be found at the WV Archives and History Web site at http://www.wvculture.org/history in the Archives section.

Information on sending a research request can be found on our Web site at http://www.wvculture.org/history. You will also find addresses for historical/genealogical societies. You could try writing to the society in the relevant county/counties. For this time period you will need to know the county to be searched, since there are no statewide indexes.

I know of three small graveyards in the area that don't seem to be well known. I don't know of any right at the location of the old town of Westerly, but one is just about a mile up the road from where Westerly existed. The one that seems most promising is just past the turnoff to Kingston. I'll try to check it out, and let you know if I find any marked grave with your family names on them. Since there are no overall lists or registration of cemeteries in West Virginia, you need to determine the most likely county where each person would have been buried. If you do not have death records, find them in the census and check sources for the county where you last find the family living. Some historical/genealogical societies have produced cemetery inventory books, and many will respond to written requests for assistance. You can locate WV societies on the WV Archives and History Web site at http://www.wvculture.org/history . You can also try locating a currently operating funeral home in the area through directory/yellow pages assistance. Good luck in your search.
