No need for a "lead a defense" at that time, the Indians were friendly. Here's a very brief overview: If I remember correctly from my readings, there was an incident in Brimfield?, MA (I think - can't seem to find this text again off hand) where Indians were killed for no reason and started an Indian outrage. The people in the first settlement of Northfield got along very well with the Indians there. They lived near each other and worked in their respective fields with each other, traded, etc. This news about the attack on the Indians in Brimfield reached the Indians at Northfield first (news traveled faster in their network) and they attacked the Northfield settlement. Unknowing of any problems, Lieut. Samuel Wright and others were working in their fields when they were ambushed; a surprise attack. To Samuel and the others, it was just another ordinary day.
