He was born in Letcher County May 17, 1844 and died in January of 1931. He was a very colorful fellow , he was the "law of pine mountain". He was also called Bad John Wright and "The Tall Sycamore" in Eastern Kentucky. He got the nickname of "Devil John" because he was a Pinkerton agent and if he was after a manhe never stopped until he got him so people said if John Wright is after you , you have the devil on your heels. John Fox , Jr wrote the book "Trail of the Lonesome Pine" after John Wrights life after visiting in his home and listening to his stories.
