As you suggest and as we have learned by doing genealogy, the name was often spelled as the census taker chose to write it down.. We have to remember that back then (and very often even now).. spelling wasn't a priority.. That is one of the reasons that the SOUNDEX system was set up for researching in the census records.... one can research by the phonetics thereof. My great grandmother's family spelled the name Dyson.. they were from NC and formerly from MD.. all the way back it was DYSON... my Wrights were also from NC... that is the reason I asked about the DYSON name..
