WorldConnect has lots of listings of John Campbell, son of George Campbell, born c. 1760, died 1838 in Amherst County. No daughter married to a Wright is named in those listings. However, Wills of Amherst County, Virginia, 1761-1865 by Bailey Davis lists the will of Jno. Wright dated May 16, 1837, and probated February 19, 1838, at Amherst County W.B. 9/379 which names his children, including one deceased daughter Nancy Wright. [Davis even mentions his ancestor Jno. Preston Campbell of Nicholas County, Kentucky, who cannot be connected to 1842 Jno. S. Campbell of Amherst County.] The marriage record of Nancy Campbell, daughter of John Campbell, and Benjamin Wright was dated on February 12, 1805, at Amherst County, Virginia: "Date of Bond: 1805 Feb, 12 Name of Husband: Benjamin Wright Name of Wife: Nancy Campbell Parents or Guardian of Wife: John Campbell Security and Witnesses: James Cash; S. Garland, John W. Wright, Alexander Gillaspie" James Wright, born c. 1806 and the grandson of John Campbell, was thus the son of Benjamin Wright and Nancy (Campbell) Wright, grandson of 1830 Moses Wright of Amherst County and Elizabeth (Whitehead) Wright, great grandson of 1799 Benjamin Wright of Amherst County and Elizabeth (_____) Wright, and great great grandson of 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County and Mary (Hawkins) Wright. The following is additional information on your James Wright now that he has been identified as the son of Benjamin Wright. The marriage record of James Wright and Catharine Williams was dated on January 10, 1825, at Amherst County, Virginia: "Know all men by these presents that we James Wright & Charles Wright are held and firmly bound unto James Pleasants Esqr. Governor of Virginia and to his successors in office for the use of the Commonwealth in the sum of $150 Current money of Virginia to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Exors and admors Jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 10th day of January 1825. The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage intended shortly to be had and solemnized between the above bound Jas Wright and Catharine Williams Now if there should be no legal cause to obstruct said Marriage then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force and Virtue. James Wright Charles Wright Amherst County to wit: This day Charles Wright made oath that the within named Catharine Williams was twenty one years of age Given under my hand this 10th day of Jany 1825. A. B. Davies Ck" The listing of Charles Wright as surety on the bond indicates that this James Wright was the son of Benjamin Wright and brother Charles Wright, but further research will be required to confirm this identification. The 1825 & 1826 Personal Property Tax Lists for Amherst County list James Wright. The 1828 & 1829 Personal Property Tax Lists for Nelson County list James Wright. The 1833 & 1834 Personal Property Tax Lists for Amherst County list James Wright. On September 17, 1838, at Amherst County, Virginia, D.B. On August 21, 1840, at Amherst County Virginia, D.B. X/345 Wiatt Wright, Eliza Wright, George Wright, Rachel Wright, Moses Wright, Ellen Jane Wright, and Rhoda Wright of Gallia County, Ohio, appointed James Wright of said county and state their attorney in fact to collect their interest in the estate of their grandfather John Campbell: "Know all men by these presents that we Wiatt Wright & Eliza his wife George Wright & Rachel his wife Moses Wright & Ellin Jane his wife Rhoda Wright & Levicy Wright all of the County of Gallia & State of Ohio do hereby constitute & appoint James Wright of said County & said state our Lawful attorney for us and in our names & for our uses to collect by suit or otherwise all our part or portion of Estate coming to us from our Grand Father John Campbell Decd of the County of Amherst and State of Virginia and whatsoever our aforesaid Lawful attorney (James Wright) shall do in our names aforesaid we do hereby ratify and confirm the same as if we were all personally present with power also to settle & adjust all matters of Debt between us & all persons whomsoever in the State aforesaid hereby ratifying and confirming all that our said attorney or his substitute shall do therein by Virtue hereof In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this Twenty first Day of A! ugust A.D. 1840 Sealed and delivered his in presence of Wiatt X Wright Henry Neal mark N _____ McLeod her Eliza X Wright mark George Wright his Moses X Wright mark Ellin Jane Wright his Rhoda X Wright mark her Levicy X Wright mark State of Ohio Gallia County SS Be it remembered that on the twenty first day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight Hundred & forty personally appeared before us Normond McLeod and Henry Neal two of the Justices of the peace in and for the county and state aforesaid the within named Wiatt Wright and Eliza his wife Moses Wright Ellen Jane his wife George Wright and Rachel his wife Rhoda Wright and Levicy Wright and severally acknowledged the within Power of attorney to be their free and voluntary act and and for the purposes therein expressed. Given under our hands and seals this day and date first written N. McLeod J.P. Henry Neal M.P State of Ohio ) Gallia County ) I Joseph Droudillard Clerk of the Court of common Pleas of the said County of Gallia do hereby certify that Norman McLeod and Henry Neal before whom the foregoing Power of attorney appears to have been acknowledged were at that time acting Justices of the peace in and for said County duly commissioned and qualified and that full faith and credit are due and ought to be given unto all their official acts as such as well in Courts of Justice as thereout. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name and affixed the seal of said Court at Galliapolis this 24th day of August A.D. 1840 Jos. Drouillard clk In the Clerks office of Amherst County Court on the 24th day of September 1840 This Power of attorney was recieved duly certified and admitted to record Teste Saml M Garland Ck" I originally thought that the reference in this power of attorney to James Wright of "said county and state" meant that James Wright resided on August 21, 1840, in Gallia County, Ohio, but this was probably a scrivener error by the preparer who just added that stock phrase after James Wright's name. Very typically, a power of attorney would be given to someone still residing in the county where an estate was being handled so that they could execute the necessary documents for settling the estate or selling the assets, which is what appears to have been done here. I would be happy to exchange information on this Wright line with any interested researchers. Robert N.
