    1. Re: [WRIGHT] Simeon Wright 1750-1847 decendants, living Mr. Wrights
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: richardwright142 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wright/15221.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Regarding the assumption, made by the previous poster, that Simeon Wright was dead when his wife Sarah filed the Claim for Losses in 1786: The document itself says, "Simeon Wright.now an inhabitant of Canada." as I quoted previously. Also, this document seems to imply in two other places that Simeon Wright is still alive. Additionally, there were at least three obvious places in this document where the clerk could have put "former" or "deceased" or some other word that would indicate Simeon Wright was dead. I can think of at least 2 reasons why Sarah might have had to file the document for her husband while he was still alive, but I'll leave that out because it is just speculation. (see my previous post for source citation) Regarding the "data free" assertion, made by the previous poster, that the "Simeon Wright" listed on the July 1st to August 31st 1786 "Fredericksburgh" Provisioning List was actually one of the Simeon Wrights from Connecticut: The Crowder book transcribes 67 Provisioning lists from different settlements in (what is now) Ontario dated from 1783 to 1789. There are very few Wrights, and only one listing of Simeon Wright, in all of these lists. The July 1st to August 31st 1786 "Fredericksburgh" Provisioning List contains 107 households. Included on the Fredericksburgh list, in addition to "Simeon Wright", are the names "Wait Wright", and, "Zenos Ross" (who is the husband of Rachel Wright a daughter of our Simeon and Sarah), and, "James Lindsey" (who is the husband of Losina another daughter of our Simeon and Sarah). Also listed is Daniel Dafoe, who is probably the (future?) husband of Elizabeth Wright another daughter of Simeon and Sarah. (see my previous post for source citation of the Crowder book) (The sources which tie Zenus Ross, and James Lindsey to Simeon and Sarah Wright are "Loyalist Lineages of Canada 1783-1983, Toronto Branch The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada" Generati! on Press, 1984, and, "The Loyalists in Ontario the Sons and Daughters of the American Loyalists of Upper Canada", by William D. Reid, Hunterdon House, Lambertville, New Jersey, 1973) So, we why would we conclude (without any evidence) that amidst other members of our family, in a small settlement in Canada, that the person with the name Simeon Wright is actually from another unrelated family from Connecticut? There are only two Wrights on this list: Simeon and Wait. Initially I considered that this Simeon Wright might be Simeon b. 1750 instead of Simeon b. 1726 but since the household lists only 1 man and 1 woman, that sort of eliminates Simeon b. 1750; he had children, including young ones. Simeon Wright b. 1750 and "his sons" were at the Anti Court Riot in Rutland, VT in November 1786 (this is from page 230 of "The History of Rutland Vermont 1761-1861" by Dawn Hance, Rutland Historical Society, 1991). Regarding the previous poster asserting that Captain Simeon Wright was buried in Rutland, Vermont according to the Vermont Revolutionary Rolls: The Vermont Revolutionary Rolls are only Payrolls from the Revolutionary War, with some lists of Officers. The Rolls contain No Information Whatsoever about Deaths or Burials. Since I have so many of the Vermont sources in my possession, I am pretty sure where the posters' erroneous data came from, but due to time constraints, I'll not write much about that wrong information. (The previous poster has again "picked" the "wrong" Simeon Wright) I have found no record anywhere that shows a Simeon Wright being buried in Rutland. I won't list my sources on this. I only brought this up to say that the Rolls can't be the source for the previous poster because the Rolls contain no information about deaths or burials at all. Regarding property sales in Rutland, VT: Many of the old land deeds were not recorded. I have copies of all of the recorded deeds involving our family during the early history of Rutland. The name Simeon Wright appears on 19 deeds in Rutland from 1773 to 1824. Each of these can be tied to either Simeon b 1726 or Simeon b. 1750. Wait Wright sold the same piece of property twice, once on 5-23-1783 and again on 5-17-1784. There is no record of a transfer from Simeon b. 1726 or his wife, but it appears to me that Simeon b. 1750 moved onto Simeon b. 1726's property along Otter Creek at some point. The homestead that Simeon b. 1750 sold on 12-11-1823 (and again on 4-9-1824) when he left Rutland appears to be the same property where Simeon b. 1726 had resided many years previously. It could have been that, since they had the same name, and, that Simeon b. 1750 had resided there for almost 40 years, that when he sold in it 1823/4 the chain of title didn't matter to the buyer or other parties. (This last sentence is ! mostly speculation) (Recorded deeds, including the ones I refer to here, are housed at the Rutland Town Hall in Rutland) This thread reminds us why it is so very important to cite sources whenever one "challenges" another about the true facts involving these long ago relatives. Then, when one makes an error, it can be traced and corrected. If one just states things as if they are "the truth", without any source, many times it actually obscures the truth. I can't resist one smile about the statement, "He was stricken from the List of Loyalists by the British Government of Canada" from the previous poster. Please. And just what is the source of this statement? Could it be from records maintained in the "Office of the Secretary of Name Striking"? I bet that we will never hear about a source on that one. We need to know the exact, correct, name of the source, and it's location, so we can check it out for ourselves. If I don't respond to the next post by "oldmedico", don't assume that I agree with anything he says, or that I am unable to counter him point by point. My best to all, Richard Wright Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
