WILLIAM WRIGHT (1821 - 1874 ) (from History of Putnam County, Indiana) William Wright, a pioneer, of Putnam County, was born in Lawrence, Indiana, April 13, 1821, a son of Samuel and Jane Wright, natives of Kentucky. His grandfather, William Wright, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and after the war settled in Wayne County, Kentucky. His paternal ancestors were Welsh and his maternal, Irish. In 1824 he came to Putnam County with his parents, who located on the National Road, four miles south of Greencastle, where the father entered 160 acres of land and settled in the dense woods. He first erected a round log cabin, and the first year cleared the ground and put in sufficient corn to last them a year. About 1847 he removed to Mill Creek Township, locating on a farm which he had previously entered from the Government, and which had been leased for some time. He remained there until his decease, August 6, 1874. He was the father of thirteen children, of whom nine are now living: (1.) Hon. Greenwood Wright, of Wayne County. Iowa; | Greenwood Wright (Aug. 30, 1818 - Dec. 30, 1899) | | Susan L. (May) (Oct. 29, 1819 - Nov. 30, 1900) | | Buried Confidence Cem., Wright Twp, Wayne Co., IA| (2.) The deceased: Martha, Sallie, Lucinda, and Templeton. When he settled in the county wolves were in abundance, and bridle paths were the only roads. He came here with five horses and money enough to enter 160 acres of land. From this beginning he acquired a large estate. He gave his children a fair education and a good start in life. He was a minister in the Regular Baptist church and in politics a Republican. William Wright, our subject, has been reared to manhood in this county, and he received a common-school education.
