John and Jane emigrated to Boston from the Glasgow, Scotland area around 1873. Govan Johnson Lang Wright, b. 1875 in Roxbury MA, married Annie M. Webber Shrader in St. George, ME in 1899. Carlen (Callen), John and Jane were born in Maine. Isabelle, Robert and Elizabeth were born in Massachusetts. In the 1920's, some of the family relocated to East Haven, CT. Carlen was an engineer in the NY/NH/Hartford Railroad. Robert worked at Raybestos his entire life and was a Little League volunteer for 35 years in the North Branford league. As you suggest and as we have learned by doing genealogy, the name was often spelled as the census taker chose to write it down.. We have to remember that back then (and very often even now).. spelling wasn't a priority.. That is one of the reasons that the SOUNDEX system was set up for researching in the census records.... one can research by the phonetics thereof. My great grandmother's family spelled the name Dyson.. they were from NC and formerly from MD.. all the way back it was DYSON... my Wrights were also from NC... that is the reason I asked about the DYSON name.. Ellie . . . I have not seen the spelling of "Dyson" but I have seen the spelling "Dison". I was in Salt Lake City last Jul of 06 and went to the Mormon Family History Center. There was a book that (I'm sorry I have misplaced the cover page) held the families of Carroll county Arkansas. If I remember correctly it was dark red. Anyway, the book had 3 WRIGHT families: "WRIGHT - James Brantley Wright was born June 30, 1851 at the Wright homestead just north of Grandview, AR near Brush Creek. He died June 27, 1901 of typhoid fever." This article talks of his wife Elizabeth Keeland and their 7 sons and 4 daughtes, one of the sons being John "Jolly" Dison WRIGHT b. 22 Oct 1870 and d. 6 Nov 1939. The second article speaks of John WRIGHT's sons and the third article is about Joseph Samuel WRIGHT. According to this book, the writer says "It is stated the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church was organized about 1853 by several men including Brantley Wright and Dyson Wright. I believe this history is referring to James B. Wright, Feb. 2, 1830 - Jan. 20, 1858. I also believe the correct spelling of Dyson to be Dison." So here you have one man's opinion of the spelling of Dyson / Dison. I was in Philadelphia for the month of Oct working on my "blood line" who came with William Penn in 1680. I was researcing records that are not out on the Net. I discovered that a lot of the problem comes from recorders (Census takers, Tax collectors, Heirling Priests etc.) who only spell "phonetically". The obit that is commonly thought to be his 'Dr. William Wright' - is NOT this William, but a Dr. William Wright, Rev. Soldier from Conn. He had two sons in New York and no other children were mentioned in his will or a wife. Dr. Wright owned a lot of books, fine clothes, and medical instruments, and was owed money... our 'Planter' William Wright owned fine horses, farm implements, and household goods, and owed money! I have all these records so have sorted the two men out... but simply have NO idea where and when our William was born! It appears he was in Georgia before the end of the war having married in 1779 in Clarke Co., Ga. - and I believe he was thought to have deserted a unit in Virginia but rejoined when he got to Georgia. I think he was probably William Dyson Wright probably born in TN. He married Malissa Jane Moreland. His father was James G. Wright. My husband descends from Dionysius' great-grandson William Bacon WRIGHT. I would also be interested in information on this family.
