My info has these people coming from Cocke County TN which is very near the North Carolina border and Cherokee Country. They were born in North Carolina also. It is reported from the melon region that the bottom has dropped out of the market and the growers are very much discouraged. It was reported in Augusta Tuesday that Dr. James RESSE, a druggist had taken morphine with suicidal intent. This is the sacred flower of Egypt and is worshipped by the natives. It bears seed resembling the pecan nut and is good to eat. The seedpod is a curiosity. Moses SMITH, an old Negro from Washington county, was tried in Bibb county Wednesday on a writ of lunsey. After questioning Moses two or three hours the jury concluded that he had plenty of sense and he was discharged. Moses claims there was a conspiracy against him. Col. John T. WILCOX of Shell Bluff, GA, has either the largest watermelons in the State or the smallest pigs. He says that he has watermelons so large that his pigs, which have been in the habit o going into the patch, have nibbled holes in the ends, gone inside, eating as they went and now stay inside melons the most of the time. The Trinity Methodist Episcopal church in Savannah has the largest congregation of the churches in that city, and has a membership of 740. The church was built during 1848 and 1849, and the membership of old Wesley chapel moved into it in 1850, under the pastorate of the Rev. James E. EVANS. The old Wesley chapel, from which they moved, was built in 1812 and dedicated by Bishop ASBURY. It stared with a membership of 27 whites and 25 colored. The present church was dedicated by Bishop PIERCE, with a membership of 450 whites. Porter was drinking and began shooting at everybody in sight, when Wright came along and was instantly killed. Two men whose names could not be learned were also dangerously wounded. An Indian named Harjo, an accomplice of Porter escaped. Porter had his hearing before Commissioner Talbot and was bound over. The U.S. Veterans Administration will provide a headstone for a Union or Confederate Civil War veteran. There is no charge for the headstone, although the cemetery will usually have their own charge for setting the headstone. Information, including a link to an order form is at this VA website: http://www1.va.gov/opa/fact/hdstns.asp Note that there is a requirement to prove that the person served and was honorably discharged. This can typically be handled by military service records or pension records. Further, there are two organizations that have been established to recognize and continue to honor the commitment the Civil War soldiers made: The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War [SUVCW] honors those who fought for the North. The website for their national organization is: http://www.suvcw.org/ The Sons of Confederate Veterans [SCV] honors those who fought for the South. Their national website is at: http://www.scv.org/ Each website has links to Camps at the local levels. Membership in both organizations is open to any male who is a direct or collateral descendent of a Civil War veteran. In addition, SUVCW has an Associate Member category for males who are interested in the organization, but have not linked to a Civil War veteran. Further, SUVCW has three allied organizatins for females: -Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War -Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic -Womens Relief Corps These organizations are not re-enacting groups. Their purpose is truly honoring the commitment of those who fought in the Civil War. For any researcher, who has determined that an ancestor fought in the Civil War, I highly recommend considering joining one of these organizations. Mo.. He was born Jan. 1839 in Missouri and is listed in Henry County, Mo. 1860 and 1900 census with his wife, Laura. According to the Arizona Divison of the Sons of Confederate Veterans he is buried in the Citizens cemetery, in Prescott,Yavapai County, Arizona in an unmarked grave. The SCV are interested in ordering a military stone for him but unable to unless it is ordered from one of his decsendants of James Wright. Any help would be appriciated.
