If memory serves me correctly, I think I tried to contact Herb from his website when I saw there was no information on Mary Ann Wright. If he reads this, perhaps he will contact me. I'd love to get her information 'out there'. I only have a general idea of where she died/is buried - Silver Hill Township, where she was last seen. I've contacted several descendants of one of her daughters (Mary Jane Dickens), but no one seems to have any information on her. If you go back to the 1850 census, you will see that Thomas is still living. In the 1860 census, this is my Great-grandmother, Mary Ann. Given the fact that information I've recently seen shows she was born in 1818, she would be 42 in 1860. Great-Grandfather, Thomas Varker, died in a mining accident in Mecklenburg County NC in May 1854. I have a transcript of 'The Whig' new article; James served in the Civil War 1962-1865 (married 3 times - to become my Grandfather by wife #3); William, Co. D, 7th North Carolina (Infantry) died on 31 JUL 1864 at Fort Delaware. His name (verified) appears on the monument there as Pvt. William D. Parker (due to misspellings throughout his brief military career); Elizabeth married William Eddy (an English miner) July 5, 1869; Mary Jane - married into Dickens family of Davidson Co., NC; John G married (1) Gallimore, (2) Starr; Ruth married a Wall - just got information on her. Any information you may have regarding Mary Ann in her days prior to 1842 or after 1880 would be greatly appreciated. On her marriage to Thomas Varker, she gave the name of Mary Ann Geddis. It may be that she had been previously married (since it appears she is about 24 when she married Thomas - a bit old for that era). Looking forward to hearing from you. I just saw your posting regarding Richard Wright and named his children - namely MARY. Mary Ann Wright was my Great-grandmother. She married Thomas Varker (a miner from Cornwall England) in Davidson County in 1842. Their first child was James Thomas Varker, b. in Davidson in 1843; he later became my Grandfather. In all total, they had six children and I have information on them as well. I have long been told that I am of Native American lineage, but could not trace it to anyone of my other 'tree' branches. I have collected a lot of information - mainly led through 1850-1880 censuses. Her descendants are numerous - to my knowledge, mostly in NC, but some in other States as well. I know that she is not in the 1900 census, but do not know when she died or where she may be buried. I am extremely interested in any information (especially in any publications) you might have regarding Mary Ann and I would like to contribute to the Wright line as well. Middle name, Hamilton from his daughter's death certificate: "From Certificate 10044: Item #13, Father's name: James Hamilton Wright" 1900 Census about James Hamilton Head, Aug 1861, 38, Md 15, Alabama, North Carolina##, Alabama, Farmer ##As you know, census enumerators didn't always do a 100% accurate job in recording the information; AND the informants weren't necessarily family members or actually knew the real info. So we don't know for sure which Carolina was the birthplace of J H "Sr." But I would bet the proveberial "dollar to a doughnut" that J H was also James Hamilton because my Uncle Aaron Paul and his wife gave that name to my cousin. All my cousins on my dad's side are now gone. And I haven't found any descendents who seem to be interested in the family tree. Growing up, I always thought my dad and his siblings were all born in the Collinsville AL area. But when I found the WWI draft card images, my uncles' cards indicate Collinsville, DeKalb County, but Dad's card referenced Cherokee County. I think that is about enough for this post. Hi Group, Came across this site and thought some of the Wright researchers might be interested in it as there are several Wright's listed that show their births in Kentucky, Virginia, and a couple of other places.. Hope this helps. I have been researching our Wright family for about 40 years. The earliest WRIGHT found is Holden WRIGHT, born in (probably Essex County) New Jersey about 1792. He was found in Wilkinson County Mississippi where he bought public land in February 1822, and married Nancy GRIFFIN, in September of the same year. By 1827 they were in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana where they stayed. They had several children, Nancy died in 1854 and Holden WRIGHT died in Aug. 1868. Holden WRIGHT had a brother named Moses. Moses was born in 1795. He married Hannah EDWARDS in Essex County, New Jersey. They raised their family and died in Essex Co. The father of Holden and Moses was still living in 1812. Moses enlisted and his father went to Newark and got him because he was underage. He probably enlisted sometime later because he applied for and received bounty land. By searching wills in Essex County New Jersey, I have found an aunt, Susanna WRIGHT, who apparently did not marry since she left everything to her nieces and nephews (the children of Moses WRIGHT). Also through wills and probates, I have eliminated: Mary Winterton WRIGHT, of Newark, will written 15 Nov. 1852 (when she was 61), proved 10 January 1856. She left everything to her mother, sister, and 3 brothers. John WRIGHT, of Orange, will written 1 May 1820, proved 10 June 1824. He left his homestead place to his daughter Betsey and her husband William P. Loviseal (?), to be left to their children at their deaths. The rest of the real estate was left to the other grandchildren (not named), in all cases the males shall have two shares and the females shall have one share. Thank you so much for the information. It appears you, yourself, have done a lot of work on this family. I am as sure as I can possibly be that my Mary Ann Wright is the daughter of Richard, Jr. I believe it has been verified by her name being on the deed transfer. Had the Varker name not been evident, I would have questioned it; however, now I know which line of Wright's I now belong to. I cannot begin to imagine on how to get in touch with the right family members. I would truly love to get in touch with family who may know something of her. I've contacted many of the Dickens family members of Davidson - Thomas and Mary Ann's daughters, Mary Jane Varker and Sarah Varker, both married into that family. No one has any rememberance/record of Mary Ann. John, a son, married into the Gallimore family and Starr family (2nd wife); William, the second son, never married and died at Point Lookout, MD during the Civil War. My Grandfather, James, served the Confederacy by working the mines - mining ore for munitions that were used. I am so looking forward to establishing contact with other Wright family members. If you happen to know/know of any, please let them know I am here, looking for Mary Ann. I can tell them what happened to her. Perhaps I can help in establishing her line as well. Regarding the printed material you reference - is any of it still available to your knowledge? Thank you so much for going into such beautiful detail. This information will be truly valuable to me in my research for my Great-grandmother. Regards, Shirley Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
