Author: MichaelCharlesWight Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wright/15228.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I am curious why a Yorkshire boy was born in Cambridgeshire. Could it be his father was a student at the University at the time? Have you checked the Cambridge University Alumni Register for the possibility his father was at the University when he was born? To check that possibility you will need to access the reference "Alumni Cantabrigienses" for the years in question and see what Wright men were in attendance and from whence they came. You are looking for a Wright man from Yorkshire, would be my bet. This resource should be available at any good genealogical library or LDS Family research center near you, or can be purchased on a CD entitled "Cambridge University Alumni: 1261-1900". It is available from Amazon.com and cost about $30. I would try that and see what falls out. That is where I found my immigrant father in 1624 and his father in 1583 and his first cousin in 1644. The alumni registers of both Cambridge and Oxford universities are a great resource and often overlooked because we tend to think our ancestors were not that highly educated. That is not true, especially if there was a tendency in your ancestor family to associate with church activities. Those males with a religious inclination were more likely than not in those days to have acquired some university training at either Oxford or Cambridge. Money was seldom an obstacle to attendance as both universities issued permits for poor students to legally solicit donations from the public (that is, beg)in the local communities. I was actually at the Milton st. library in Cambridge today (the main library is closed for renovation) and could have looked this up for you if I had known. Unfortuanately, I have to move along to another place this weekend and will not be back to Cambridgeshire in the forseeable future. Good luck with your search. Hope you get as lucky as I was. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: richardwright142 Surnames: Wright Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wright/15221/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is addressed to any of my fellow "Mr. Wrights", those direct descendants of Simeon Wright, to ask if they might be interested in participating in "Genetic Genealogy". This can now be done by having Y Chromosome markers sampled by "cotton swab", as I did. This only applies to the single "patriarchal" male line of descendants: Simeon Wright's great great great (etc.) grandsons. If you are someone else reading this, and know of one of these "Mr. Wrights", please forward this information to him. Through an exhaustive analysis of 18th century documents, I have determined that we are descended from Simeon Wright a Revolutionary War soldier, his father Capt. Simeon Wright (also in the Rev. War, but later a Loyalist), his father Daniel Wright, and his father, the famous Capt. Benjamin Wright of Northfield, MA. Capt. Benjamin Wright's father was Samuel, and his father, Deacon Samuel Wright, who is also the forefather of the "Wright Brothers" of aviation fame. What we are trying to do is to have the Y chromosome markers from as many of our Simeon Wright descendants as possible in order to verify, genetically, that the paper record is correct. Since I am the only one in the Simeon Wright branch so far, and the DNA works through comparing mutations, we need more distant cousins to participate. My markers show that I am, in fact, descended from Deacon Samuel Wright, but we need more data to verify that we came through Capt. Benjamin Wright, etc. Having more people submit samples of Y chromosome markers may also help us verify the identity of the father of Deacon Samuel Wright. If anyone is interested, I could send you more information. I also have quite a bit more specific research information about the above ancestors. My ancestral line: Me, my father Robert, his father Frederick, then Charles, Theodore, Hiram, Simeon, Simeon, Simeon, Daniel, Benjamin, Samuel, Deacon Samuel. If you want proof that you are related to the Wright Brothers of aviation fame, this is the way to do it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Do you have any information regarding Clayton Wright's sister Mary Ann, b. 1818? I am Mary Ann's Great-granddaughter by her marriage to Thomas Varker, a miner from Cornwall, England. I have researched all six of their children. My grandfather, James Thomas Varker, was their oldest child. Information on Mary Ann's marriage document to Thomas gives her last name as Geddis. At first, I thought it was her maiden name, now I believe she may have been married once before. She was 24 when she married my GGF - kind of 'old' during those days for a first marriage. Like you, I have been told that my ancestors were Native American, but to date have not found that link. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
