WorldConnect has lots of listings of John Campbell, son of George Campbell, born c. 1760, died 1838 in Amherst County. No daughter married to a Wright is named in those listings. However, Wills of Amherst County, Virginia, 1761-1865 by Bailey Davis lists the will of Jno. Wright dated May 16, 1837, and probated February 19, 1838, at Amherst County W.B. 9/379 which names his children, including one deceased daughter Nancy Wright. [Davis even mentions his ancestor Jno. Preston Campbell of Nicholas County, Kentucky, who cannot be connected to 1842 Jno. S. Campbell of Amherst County.] The marriage record of Nancy Campbell, daughter of John Campbell, and Benjamin Wright was dated on February 12, 1805, at Amherst County, Virginia: "Date of Bond: 1805 Feb, 12 Name of Husband: Benjamin Wright Name of Wife: Nancy Campbell Parents or Guardian of Wife: John Campbell Security and Witnesses: James Cash; S. Garland, John W. Wright, Alexander Gillaspie" James Wright, born c. 1806 and the grandson of John Campbell, was thus the son of Benjamin Wright and Nancy (Campbell) Wright, grandson of 1830 Moses Wright of Amherst County and Elizabeth (Whitehead) Wright, great grandson of 1799 Benjamin Wright of Amherst County and Elizabeth (_____) Wright, and great great grandson of 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County and Mary (Hawkins) Wright. The following is additional information on your James Wright now that he has been identified as the son of Benjamin Wright. The marriage record of James Wright and Catharine Williams was dated on January 10, 1825, at Amherst County, Virginia: "Know all men by these presents that we James Wright & Charles Wright are held and firmly bound unto James Pleasants Esqr. Governor of Virginia and to his successors in office for the use of the Commonwealth in the sum of $150 Current money of Virginia to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Exors and admors Jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 10th day of January 1825. The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage intended shortly to be had and solemnized between the above bound Jas Wright and Catharine Williams Now if there should be no legal cause to obstruct said Marriage then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force and Virtue. James Wright Charles Wright Amherst County to wit: This day Charles Wright made oath that the within named Catharine Williams was twenty one years of age Given under my hand this 10th day of Jany 1825. A. B. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name and affixed the seal of said Court at Galliapolis this 24th day of August A.D. 1840 Jos. Drouillard clk In the Clerks office of Amherst County Court on the 24th day of September 1840 This Power of attorney was recieved duly certified and admitted to record Teste Saml M Garland Ck" I originally thought that the reference in this power of attorney to James Wright of "said county and state" meant that James Wright resided on August 21, 1840, in Gallia County, Ohio, but this was probably a scrivener error by the preparer who just added that stock phrase after James Wright's name. Very typically, a power of attorney would be given to someone still residing in the county where an estate was being handled so that they could execute the necessary documents for settling the estate or selling the assets, which is what appears to have been done here. I would be happy to exchange information on this Wright line with any interested researchers. Robert N. Though you probably remember this also, let me add the following paragraph for everyone else's benefit: as per a post you wrote in October 2000 titled "James Wright (Nelson County, Va)": "I have found no birth records for children of James and Elizabeth in Nelson County. James Wright appears on the 1844 Nelson County Personal Property Tax List on the same date as Shelton Wright and owned 1 horse. He also appears in 1845, 1846 1847 with 1 horse and in 1848 1849 with 2 horses, but not in the 1850 list. There is a deed of trust dated May 8, 1846, and recorded at Nelson County D.B. 11/336 in which a James Wright of Nelson County secured a debt for rental of William Massie's farm with four cows, a yearling, one horse, one stallion, and other personal property as well as all of his interest in the estate of his late grandfather John Campbell of Amherst. This was probably the same James Wright as the James listed in the 1850 Nelson Census, since there was no other James Wright listed in either that census or the Nelson County Personal Property Tax Lists for 1846. A tracing through the Campbell family may help you to identify this James Wright." The 1840 Census for Nelson County, Virginia, does not list a James Wright household. The marriage record of James Wright and Elizabeth M. My direct ancestor was John James "Preston" Wright, s/o James and Elizabeth. It looks as though James (b.1806) died by 1870 and that Elizabeth remarried a Richard Davis, though she is not listed in his household until the 1880 census in Raleigh Co, WV. James and Elizabeth are a brickwall for me and I have posted a more detailed query about them on this site. Attached to this post is a photo of an unidentified couple. The photo belonged to my grandmother (1929-2005) who said it could have been James Wright (b.1806) and his wife. Family story is that James was married twice and that his second wife was Betsy McGan/McCan/Megann/any variation of that name. I never found that James was married to anyone other than Elizabeth M. Sometimes that will show the names of the parents. Also, would a census record show that or show where his parents were from? Not an easy name to research, as it's a fairly common name. I wish you all luck. And while it's good to be adopted, I can understand your desire to know your own personal roots. Wright on January 24, 1850 in Montgomery County, Georgia. They are living with her mother Lenora (James' widow) in the 1850 census, but by 1860 Sarah and Lott seem to disappear. In the 1860 census their son, also named Lott W. Wright (age 8) is living with Lenora Nash. I find later census references to a Lott W. Wright and a Warren Wright (same age) who lived in Clinch County. Is this one and the same? I would be very grateful to anyone who could help me straighten out this line. Since the 1890 census was destroyed in a basement fire in D.C., I cannot locate any documents with the young Noel listed along with his parents. Hence, I am stuck at that level of my Wright lineage.
