W. Slatterly Found in the Wichitas R. A. Wright Held On Murder Charge Some Indications of a Lynching - The Sheriff Summons Fifty Deputies - Body of Dead Man Bore Unmistakable Evidence of Murder Hobart: After a week's search the body of W. W. Slatterly, who is supposed to have been murdered by a companion in the Wichita mountains, was found at Little Tepee Mountain, twenty miles southwest of Hobart, in the reserve. The body bore unmistakable evidence of murder. As a result of the murder the intense feeling against R. A. Wright, the suspected murderer, has been intensified, and fears that an attempt would be made to lynch him caused the sheriff to summons fifty deputies to guard the jail where Wright is confined. Armed guards are watching the building, while several hundred men have gathered and talk of mob violence is heard on every hand. Sheriff Morrison is using every effort to induce the crowd to make no attempt at violence, and the mayor, Mr. Holland, addressed the people, pleading that the law be allowed to take its course. The finding of the body seems to confirm the theory of a brutal murder. Two weeks ago Slatterly, who was a respected farmer living six miles from Hobart, went to the mountains for a hunt, accompanied by Wright. A few days later Wright returned to Hobart alone, with the team and two or three stories in reference to the absence of his companion, all of which disapproved. Suspicion of foul play led to the arrest of Wright, and he produced what purported to be a bill of sale for the team and cotton owned by Slatterly. He was detained in custody of the offices and searching parties began a hunt for Slattery. Public feeling against Wright was so intense that he was removed to the jail at Anadarko for safe keeping, but brought back here for a preliminary trial on the charge of larceny of domestic animals, pending the result of the search for Slatterly. WRIGHT_DARLING I am sure both Gideon and Hezekiah WRIGHT were from ENGLAND circa 1690's but where, and how does one search when no known clues are available. Both died circa 1778 in North Carolina, family after the rev. war went to Kentucky and then On to Missouri thru the Civil War(USA) and then scattered west. The British connection is via the DARLING/DERLING surname and maybe EMYART/INGARD. DWSBGS@centurytel.net

I am quite sure it is a male Wright, in fact, I thought it might be my great great grandfather James Monroe Wright, in middle age. However, to the best of my knowledge, James never resided in Lebanon. He was born and raised in Bristol Bucks PA and removed to Illinois in 1864. He may have passed thru Lebanon but would not likely have stopped at a photo studio for a formal portrait! As far as I know, none of his line, brothers, father etc. lived in Lebanon Co. Anyway, if anyone is researching Wrights in Lebanon PA, especially if you think they may have Bucks Co ties, please contact me. Thanks! My grandfather William Henry WRIGHT was born abt 1877 (ish) not sure where. His father is named as John, a lighterman, on William's marriage certificate in 1911 issued in Greenwich. My father was born and lived in the London area, so I've always thought that grandfather was born there, but maybe not. Last week Slattery and R. A. Wright, two farmers of Kiowa County, went hunting in the Wichita mountains. A few days later Wright returned alone, bringing Slatter's team, and suspicion having been aroused, he was arrested, and a bill of sale for Slattery's team and cotton was discovered. A coat which has been identified as having belong to Slattery was also found. A party of hunters say they saw two men go into the mountains, and Wright has been identified as the one who returned. Wright has been placed in jail here to prevent his being lynched. When Wright was placed in jail he sent this message to his wife, through George Ratcliff of Hobart: "George, tell my wife to cheer up; they can't prove anything." When Wright returned from the trip he told two stories concerning the disappearance of Slattery. One was that the missing man had gone to Chillicothe, Missouri and another that he went to Rainy Mountain. Telegraphic inquiry soon disproved theses stories and Wright was then arrested. Looking for a William (?) Wright that was born about 1725 +or- 10 years and died after 1800 that lived in Orange Co, NY most likely. He was a Tory and very bull headed about the Rev War, he had a daughter Abigail born in 1753 in Orange County that married Joseph Johnson, and he had at least two sons John and Samuel. He may have been a Capt serving from NY or CN. His son's were officers also. He disinherited Abigail because she married married a young Rev. Soldier. He never forgave her. He is suppose to have married a Wolcott, a descendant of Roger Wolcott. I can not confirm anything on this family, other than Abigail and her family that came to (W)VA in 1800. Her son was Gov of VA and the family is buried at the Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport, WV. Any help would be so appreciated. I have looking for this Wright for 35 years. Nana Jo Winter
