Author: MichaelWright12 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wright/16531.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: MsLefty, Checking up on my genealogical blogs, huh? I guess I have left quite a trail of commentary on New England Wrights and Wrights of co. Essex, England. I've been at this for over 25 years, the last 15 of it included extensive use of the Internet to ask questions and transmit information I have gathered over those years of work. I am a researcher by instinct, training and passion. When I am not doing analytical biochemistry research for a living, I find other types of research projects to pass the time, like genealogy. Someday I'm gonna finish a book I started on some 15 years ago. The problem with finishing it is that I just keep learning all this incredible new stuff all the time. I am almost ashamed to finish and publish it because, like science subjects such as chemistry, the more you learn, the better you understand just how ignorant you are of the subject. There is just so much you can begin to see you should know, that you can't easily find out without a lot of real hard effort. All research is humbling, even if we are just talking about our ancestors. The Wright DNA project web site is www.wright-dna.org. There are now over 300 participating men in the program representing over 100 completely separate genealogical lineages. It is the best genealogical research resource I can think of to instantly find totally unknown cousins and potential research collaborators. If I were faced with a choice of participating in genetic testing for genealogical purposes with FTDNA or with National Geographic's Genographic testing program, I would have to choose FTDNA. The cost for a 12 marker Y-DNA test at FTDNA is also $99, and FTDNA is able to accurately predict the haploid from those marker values. You may then opt into participation with the National Genographic Program through FTDNA by telling FTDNA to upload your husband's Y-DNA profile to the NG Genographic database. There is no charge for this. It is a free service just like participation in the Surname project you choose is also free. So, by going to FTDNA for your testing, you will, for the same price, get both individual results to use in answering genealogical questions with your husband's Y-DNA profile AND be able to contribute to the very worthwhile National Genographic Project whose data output is a world wide gene mapping project of sweeping anthropological importance, but not much help with genealogical questions. If your questions are anthropological in nature, rather than genealogical, then by all means the Genographic Project is the place to go. But not if your questions are genealogical. In a "bang for your buck" analysis, FTDNA clearly is the value-added winner. Their web site again is www.familytreedna.com. If your husband does just the 12 marker minimum Y-DNA testing for $99, he will know his haploid and his Wright family group, but will not obtain the information about ethnic background that we talked about in our last e-mail. He also will not get that kind of information from the National Geographic project testing. This ethnic background testing program is a relatively new test strategy using data from completely different genes than those used for Y-DNA or mitochodrial DNA testing (which are used by the Genographic Project for its anthropological mapping). This ethnic profiling testing has been going on as basic research, unavailable to the general public, for a number of years now but only in the last half year or so has the data of this type accumulated in the world wide database such that it has reached the critical size where predictions based on the values of these genes appear to be quite accurate in predicting ethnicity back to about 5 or 6 generations for both males and females. To my mind, if your husband wants to know it all; his haploid group, his Wright family group and his ethnic background mix, there is no better value than FTDNA's 37 marker Y-DNA/Family Finder combo service for $289.00. It will take a couple of years of work just to make full use of the data from such! test results. So, your friend is right. The National Geographic testing program is not very individualized and will be of limited help answering the questions you asked about the rumors regarding your husband's ethnicity. FTDNA test results can answer those genealogical questions, and knowing your husband's haplogroup also puts you in a position to use the data from the National Geographic's Genographic Project to trace that deep roots anthropological question their database was designed to address. That is my humble recommendation. It depends on what you want to know and how much you are willing to pay to get the answers as to which way you go in genetic testing, if any way at all. I have found it to be a very powerful research tool. I now know my male line roots clear back to Roman Republic days before the birth of Christ. The illumination provided for the period 1424 back to 223 B.C. was provided strictly by genetic testing results. Genetic testing data also helped solidify some of the shaky documentation between 1424 and today for not just me, but a number of others in our family group. We also have come together with other distant cousins whose most recent common ancestors with us were 70 generations or more ago. That has been almost stupifying in the way it has broadened and deepened our knowledge of the lives of those from whom we have descended back into antiquity when inherited surnames did not exist to guide us. I hope you can get up the funds to do the combo test. I think you will be absolutely amazed at what having the data from those tests will do for your research into your husband's ancestry. MsLefty, I've read that if you had X number(I think 5) of generations here in America, you most likely had some Native American ancestry. The population was small, fewer choices, the inevitable happened. Try Googling the subject to see what you come up with. After reading some of your older posts on ancestry.com, it's obvious that you've done a lot of homework on the Wrights of the U.S. My husband, David Allen Wright (no, he's not the all-star third baseman - just goes to show how many Dave Wrights there are, and he has a cousin Mike as well) has talked about getting his DNA tested. You see, not only is there the family rumour about Indian blood, but Dave's GGF's WWII draft card describes him as "negro," although all the other records say he's white. I read with interest an old post of yours where you described the Wright DNA Project with the Y-DNA profile of dozens of Wright lines from all over the country. Is this project still ongoing? This is taken from Burke's Commoners and Dugdale's Visitation of Yorkshire. As to #5 on your list, my records list the John Wright who married Elizabeth (Bronaugh) (Darnall) Wright as 1792 John Wright of Fauquier County, VA. Recent Y-DNA evidence confirms that he was not the son of 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County, VA, and Dorothy (_____) Wright. The circumstantial evidence currently available indicates that he was possibly the son of John Wright (Westmoreland County, VA, Overseer), but further research is needed to confirm this identification. Culpeper County, VA, was only formed in 1748, so this John Wright would not have been born in that county. It is more likely that he was born in Westmoreland County, VA. He was born before October 2, 1700. As to #14 on your list, my records list George Wright who married Mary B. Spindle as 1850 George Wright of Essex County, VA, and that he was the: 1) son of 1840 Thomas Wright of Essex County, VA, and Mary (Pitts) Wright, 2) grandson of 1798 Benjamin Wright of Essex County, VA, and Alfrica (Stuart) Wright, and 3) great grandson of 1769 George Wright of Essex County, VA, and Elizabeth (_____) Wright. As to #32 on your list, my records list Mary Lucinda Wright who married John Richard Motley as the: 1) daughter of 1855 David Pitts Wright and Mary Emily (Pitts) Wright, 2) granddaughter of 1815 Edward Wright of King and Queen County, VA, and Mary J. (Pitts) Wright, 3) great granddaughter of 1772 William Wright of Essex County, VA, and Martha (possibly Lowry) Wright, and 4) great great granddaughter of 1769 George Wright of Essex County, VA, and Elizabeth (_____) Wright. As to #41 on your list, my records list the Thomas Wright who married Elizabeth McGehee as 1791 Thomas Wright of Cumberland County, VA, and that he was the son of 1769 George Wright of Essex County, VA, and Elizabeth (_____) Wright. Your family's antique photograph album has been located! I am Robert D. King and in my travels, I see family photos lost in antique stores and for sale on ebay. I think that is sad knowing that there are family tree researchers and descendants that would treasure those photos. So I have decided to try and do something about it by returning as many as I can to their rightful families. So I buy photos with names and dates or places on them and list them on my webpage, so descendants of these lost souls can find them and bring them home. The thousands of photographs are mostly from the 1800's and include Tintypes, Daguerreotypes, Cabinet Cards, Carte-de-visites, Personal Picture Postcards, Photo Albums and Yearbooks. Recently, I was able to acquire the following album: Chester County, Pennsylvania & Wilmington, Delaware Families Photo Album This is a Civil War era photo album that measures 7 x 5.5 x 2 inches. It is a black leather album with a raised golden rose and white faux pearl pegs. One section of pages have pulled away from the back but the important thing is that the portraits are in excellent shape. There are 24 cdvs, 10 tintypes plus a negative of a man & a horse. Almost all of the photos are from Pottstown, Coatesville, West Chester or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or else Wilmington, Delaware The names in the album are: Thomas Naylor ----- Wilmington, Delaware Helen Mc Elheney --- a tintype of two women --- Anna Jane Wright ------- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Esther Moore ----- Wilmington, Delaware Thomas Naylor Jr. ----- Wilmington, Delaware Jas. P. Wright ----- Wilmington, Delaware Erline Wright ----- Wilmington, Delaware Jose (Josephine?) ------ Wilmington, Delaware Sallie Pollero --- Coatesville, Pennsylvania A photo of Dr. Reney --- who brought me into this world 15 Dec. 1884 Daniel L. Britten ------- Pottstown, Pennsylvania NOTE: Find A Grave has Birth: Dec. 15, 1884, Death: May 29, 1959 Saint Petersburg, Florida Buried in Chester County, Pennsylvania Daniel Britten was a veteran of both World War I and II. If you or anyone you know might want to purchase this heirloom and bring it back into the family, please contact me at: [email protected] Please feel free to check out your other family names: http://fourkings.freeyellow.com/Page3.html Thanks, Robert D. Author: MichaelWright12 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wright/16531.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear MsLefty, FTDNA has a test that will give you a scientifically irrefutable answer of YES or NO to that question for $289. I am not sure that anyone else can answer your question by any documented genealogical means. I personally know next to nothing about WV and MD Wright family groups, but it seems to me that records for those areas are spotty at best prior to your James C. whose ancestors were more likely to have mixed with the Natives at a time when the likelihood of the event never getting recorded anywhere skyrockets. The FTDNA web site at www.familytreedna.com can provide you with the means of ordering the test kit for the "Family Finder" test. Or if your husband already has tested with FTDNA for Y-DNA, they may be able to use his existing stored sample, if it has been untouched for other tests. What you would get from the "Family Finder" test (which works for women as well as men) is a percentage breakdown of your husband's major ethnic group make-up. Native American is one of the major ethnic groups that a percentage is given for. If he turns out to have a substantial percentage number in the Native American ethnic category, say, 5% - 10% or thereabouts, then the chances are pretty good one of his more remote ancestors was mixed up with Native Americans....not necessarily the Wrights themselves, but perhaps in his mother's line. If his mother and father are still living and both have the test done on their own samples, their "Family Finder" test profiles would help confirm which line, paternal or maternal, the Native American contribution came from. I know times are tough and $289 is a lot of money to answer such a seemingly simple question, let alone 3x $289, but I think it is the quickest and surest way of knowing whether you are wasting your time looking into this family "rumor". If your husband's results come back low for Native American, then the issue is closed, but if it comes back with a significant number for Native American, then the additional cost of testing Mom and Dad or a sibling of both Mom and Dad would be needed to resolve whether the contribution was maternal or paternal in origin. Sorry I don't have anything cheaper to offer. Best of Luck, Mike Wright Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
