3. Hi, Suzanne I'll bet a few of our members could help you in your quest. We have war brides from 25 countries in our organization and I'm sure some of them have made such quilts. BTW, we held our 2006 War Brides Reunion in San Antonio! If you are interested in contacting our members, please contact me OFF LIST. My father flew in a B-17 and was stationed at Bassingbourne in England. I also love quilts and history. I am trying to start a national data base of WWII patriotic quilts before all the people who know the history of these quilts are dead. I would like to collect a photo(s) of the quilt, preferably digital; the name(s) of the quilter maker(s); the name of the soldier and military information; the approximate date the quilt was made and the story behind the quilt. It would also be nice to know the current owner and their relationship. If you have any suggestions or know of any of these patriotic quilts (Victory quilts, Red Cross quilts, quilts with specific soldiers names, etc) I would appreciate hearing from you. 3. Other listers... My husband was in the 8th Air Force, stationed in Bury St. Edmunds, Rougham Field. I find this list rather restrictive. Seems like every time I ask a question, it is not right..send it somewhere else or some such thing. As long as it does not get too political..and I have never seen that, I am OK with anything anyone puts here Ann in Oregon --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I figured this group would provide some good leads along the way, as Im sure it will. 3. I am new to this list and was wondering if anyone could give me some advise or a good website where I can find information about a nurse in WW1 Georgina BARDEN was born in Dublin in 1884 and I know she was a nurse in WW1 in France. According to family stories she apparently married a Grenadier Guard, but I cannot find what happened to her or any info on her after the war. Any help would be greatly appreciated regards Sherylee

    1. Nurse/VAD Edith Matthews
    2. Mrs Julie Goucher
    3. Hello everyone, This is really a long short, but I have lost Edith Matthews post 1901 in Surrey England. Here are the details of my Edith. Born in 1877 the daughter of John Matthews & Elizabeth SPENCER. Elizabeth died after 1881 and John remarried and moved to Surrey - a small parish called Merrow just outside of Guildford. John, his 2nd wife Maria and Edith were living in Merrow in 1891 and in 1901, although in 1901 John Matthews is recorded as a widower. Also residing with them was Edith's brother John born 1875, and it was this John who was my great grandfather. Oral family history states that Edith was a nurse, although was known to have married and had several children. I have photographs of Edith in a early 20th Century nursing over coat, and another two photos with her with a boy and a girl and then the same children with a newish baby. There are no nursing records of Edith, but a reference has come to light of a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) during the Boer War and the reference shows that Edith MATHEWS was mentioned in Kitcheners dispatches in Mafeking in 1902. Is this the same Edith? I searched Ellis Island and located a Edith MATTHEWS of London aged (from memory) 27 years. Guildford is only 30 miles from London and perhaps this is her. My grandmother was given Edith as her middle name and never met Edith at all. I have a photograph of Edith in her VAD uniform loaded to the web page http://freespace.virgin.net/anglers.rest/edith.jpg - if anyone can comment on the attire of Edith or have any suggestions I would be grateful. -- Regards, Julie Goucher anglers.rest@virgin.net Anglers Rest Home Page www.anglers-rest.net C J Genealogical Collections www.C-J.org.uk Anglo Italian Family History Society www.anglo-italianfhs.org.uk ORLANDO One Name Study ~ GOONS Member 3925 www.orlando-ons.co.uk --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hello everyone, I am writing on behalf of my second cousin who is looking for his biological mother. All he knows is that her name was Mary Edna WHITE and she was in England in 1938 working as a nurse. She was Canadian and served in North Africa during WW2, where she was seriously injured. She survived but went home to Canada. Any ideas about how we might track her down for him would be really grateful. DOES - " MARY EDNA WHITE " - HAVE ANY - INDIAN BLOOD - IN HER NATIONALITY? IF YES, YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE INDIAN BUREAU OF CANADA - FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA IS SEPARATE OFFICIAL GOVERNING BODY AND THE INDIAN BUREAU IS A SEPARATE OFFICIAL GOVERNING BODY.... ONE DOES NOT HAVE THE INFORMATION THAT THE OTHER HAS.... SOUNDS WEIRD - BUT TRUE! JUST A THOUGHT - IT MIGHT HELP HERE AND IT MIGHT NOT. THOU - MORE PEOPLE WILL KNOW IN THE FUTURE OF THIS SITUATION. 3. Joan, Joan! Please! > The moderator does not like chit chat, only statistics of > ships, transport etc used by the warbrides....am hoping some > of the people entering `chit-chat' in this list are also I've cc'd all three lists (Warbrides, Brits and WorldWarWomen) because this kind of statement could be misunderstood so I need to explain. Firstly, welcome back on the lists, it's good to have you. I do hope people will join in and talk to you, I am really not sure why there are so few messages. With regard to the Warbrides list, what you have said above gives quite the wrong impression. There is absolutely nothing wrong with chit chat in itself - it's just that the chit chat at that time was becoming very much 'off topic.' In other words, it didn't have anything to do with warbrides at all, it was veering off into discussions about all manner of things relating to wartime which we all enjoyed but the trouble was that it didn't belong on the Warbrides list. As for the comment that I only like statistics of ships, transport etc on Warbrides... no, that is most definitely not the case! I am sorry, but I _have_ to correct you in public because that statement will give the wrong impression to many who have joined since the posts to which you are referring, and who aren't going to realise that you have got hold of the wrong end of the stick. Eventually I stepped in and asked for the off topic chit chat to cease, but told everyone that I had started two brand new lists which would provide a forum for exactly the kind of topics (which probably covered chit chat that everyone liked so much) that we couldn't have on Warbrides. I am very sorry that some people didn't like being asked to stop, but unfortunately 'rules is rules' and part of my job as List Administrator as set out by Rootsweb themselves, is that the list should be on topic according to the guidelines given when I first requested the list. I did actually have to argue my case with Rootsweb who didn't want to give me the new lists, but I stuck to my guns and they finally agreed. Several people took offence to the extent that they unsubscribed from Warbrides, but for every one who unsubscribed when asked please to keep on topic, at least another one had unsubscribed because 'I thought we were here to talk about warbrides!' Perhaps I can be forgiven for thinking that I couldn't win either way! Since then, there have been virtually no posts on either of the two new lists, and very few on Warbrides either! Again, I am sorry if people are upset, but the bottom line is that I do have three lists for everyone, and all I am asking is that messages are sent to the appropriate list. It is very sad that all the chit chat stopped, and I do hope perhaps this message from me will clear up any misunderstandings, and allow it all to start again in its proper place! With regard to the message 'reply' system - most lists are set up so that replies go firstly to the original person who posted the message. The 'Reply All' facility is the one that sends all messages both to the original poster and to the whole list. Unfortunately few people were using that facility, and so most replies only went to one person. After explaining to everyone how to send messages to the whole list, I discovered that some people either couldn't figure out how to do it, or their email program wouldn't permit it. So I then changed it (and warned everyone that I was doing so) so that whatever button you hit, ALL replies come back to the list. That did increase the 'traffic' quite a bit. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding. Debbie Beavis

Debbie...please....you may not remember, but the first message I saw in WARBRIDES after my initial message about arriving on the Acquitainia was addressed to JOAN and was admonishing about inapropriate comments...I was at a loss to know what I had said but even after I found out there was another Joan I still felt very wary about what I should or should not say. > > > The moderator not like chit chat, only statistics of > > ships, transport etc used by the warbrides....am hoping some > > of the people entering `chit-chat' in this list are also > > I've cc'd all three lists (Warbrides, Brits and WorldWarWomen) because this > kind of statement could be misunderstood so I need to explain. > > Firstly, welcome back on the lists, it's good to have you. I do hope people > will join in and talk to you, I am really not sure why there are so few > messages. As soon as you mentioned these other lists I subscribed to both of them as I had thoroughly enjoyed the `chit-chat', (your phrase). But apart from the canned message saying my subsciption had been received there were no messages other than private ones from people who had felt as I did. I and perhaps others had absolutely no idea you had started these lists, I had thought you were just steering us to more appropriate places. I will stay subscribed to see what happens. As for the comment that I only like statistics of ships, > transport etc on Warbrides... no, that is most definitely not the case! I am > sorry, but I _have_ to correct you in public because that statement will > give the wrong impression to many who have joined since the posts to which > you are referring, and who aren't going to realise that you have got hold of > the wrong end of the stick. I do not save mesages so cannot quote your exact wording but I read it to mean you were compiling passenger lists, statistics etc and the off topic messages obfuscated and hampered you doing this. If I am wrong in this I do stand corrected. > > Eventually I stepped in and asked for the off topic chit chat to cease, but > told everyone that I had started two brand new lists which would provide a > forum for exactly the kind of topics (which probably covered chit chat that > everyone liked so much) that we couldn't have on Warbrides. I did not realise you had started these lists and that they were new, I had thought they were existing lists you thought would be more suitable for what we were doing and I was glad to see there was someplace to continue the discussions. I appreciate you must do a great deal of work to keep all this going and for that thanks are in order. > Several people took offence to the extent that they unsubscribed from > Warbrides, but for every one who unsubscribed when asked please to keep on > topic, at least another one had unsubscribed because 'I thought we were here > to talk about warbrides!' I think we did think we were talking about Warbrides and their experiences and interest would be on topic.....the way it all took off showed the interest in this so perhaps your two new lists will catch fire, I hope so. I am going to sign any future mails with `m' for mehitabel (instead of Joan). as I do in other lists. this may help any confusion with any other Joans......mehitabel was not exactly a warbride but she certainly was one of the very first `e-mailers'....I will explain this to anyone interested. m

If you take a look at my website http://www.weddingspastandpresent.co.uk you will see that I have quite a lot of stories from the War Brides, some mention the ship that you travelled on as well. Take a look, you might recognise somebody, and can then email them and chat with them. Tricia

I did notice a request for information on serving in the Forces during the war but it did not mention the Civil Defense although this was classified as a Service for the women's compulsory call-up. I put a message in the WARBRIDES list before I saw the message asking that chitchat not be entered but received no feedback on it. I served for about five years in the Civil Defense HQ in Bournemouth in the Control Room...we were the people who sounded the Air Raid alarms and All Clears. Dispatched ambulances, fire and other services, also a number of other jobs. I was the only one on the staff with secretarial training so fell into typing etc for the Controller.who was also the Mayor of Bournemouth, a very colourful character even before the war. I was rewarded for these services by the occasional egg from his farm...the egg ration at that time was about one egg per month unless you were pregnant or a nursing mother. We had many weird incidents you might be interested in. Joan....who was called by my second name, Mary, in those days, Joan is my first name and only used for legal purposes to save confusion.

    3. I have been steered to this group by the listowner of Warbrides....apparently `chit-chat was not appropriate in that list, only statistics about ship, methods of transport etc. I had been finding many of the messages about the lives of the warbides very interesting and would like to hear more, I hope some of the people have landed here also. I did receive the notice I was now subscribed but so far no messages have shown in my Inbox....perhaps an introductory message is necessary to start the flow so here it is. I arrived in Canada on February 14th at Halifax on the Aquitania. Thanks....Joan

    2. If anyone would like to share their memories of growing up in the war, especially if they were evacuated, I have an address of an 81 year old war bride, living in Canada, who is asked by local schools to go in and tell stories of her experiences. As she has been doing this for sometime now, she is running out of things to tell them and would dearly love to be able to read letters from others, to the children, especially on evacuation. Irene was one of 5 war brides living in the same area in Canada, sadly she is the only one left now, so needs help with passing on history. Irene does not use a computer, so if you would like to contact me, I can either forward your emails via post, or I can let you have her address to write to her. Tricia
