SOURCE: OPELIKA-AUBURN NEWS, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1998 MARTHA RUTH JONES Martha Ruth Jones, Major, US Army (Ret.), 93 of Durham, N.C. died Monday afternoon in Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Major Jones was born in Alabama and was raised in Columbus, Ga. She graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 1935. Ms. Jones joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in a field hospital in Iraq. She left active service as a first lieutenant in 1945 and was promoted to Major while in the reserves. Major Jones worked as the head nurse at the VA hospital in Batavia, N.Y. for many years. Following her retirement, Major Jones lived in Auburn. She moved to Durham due to health reasons in 1986 and lived briefly at the Durham Regent community. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Sara J. Williams of San Antonio, Tex; her neice, Mrs. Jean Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; a nephew by marriage, Dr. James Vander Weide of Durham; great-nephews Chuch King of Atlanta, Ga.; David Vander Weide of Washington, D.C., and Michael Vander Weide of Durham; and great-neices Barbara Wilson of Atlanta, Ga., and Kathryn Vander Weide of Durham. Major Jones was cremated and her ashes will be entombed in Columbus, Ga.
