Published Tuesday, August 8, 2006,Lakeland Ledger, Lakeland, Florida FRANCIS BARNES, 82 Mechanical Engineer LAKELAND -- Mr. Francis "Frank" W. Barnes of Lakeland died of heart failure Friday (Aug. 4, 2006) at home. He was 82. Born March 5, 1924, in Quincy, Ill., Mr. Barnes came to Lakeland from Tampa 18 years ago. He was a mechanical engineer. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a sergeant in the 77th Bomber Squadron in the Aleutian Islands during World War II and received the Bronze Star. He attended the Chicago Art Institute and also attended college for refrigeration. He was a Lutheran. Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife, Peg Smith Barnes; sons, William Barnes, Indiana, Robert Barnes, Roanoke, Va., Gary Barnes, Easley, S.C.; daughter, Julie Ann Keck, Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother, Arthur Barnes, Houston, Texas; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Heath Funeral Chapel.
