    3. Well before WW1, actually - codebreakers have been active as long as codes have been in use, both in war and in peace. Several thousand years, I should think. 3. Actually in the early 1930's the US Navy was the only source of intercepted traffic from the Japaneese, the US Army, in the 1930's, also got interested in crytoanalysis, In 1930 after the collapse of Yardley's New York "Black Chamber", William F. Friedman was given the task of creating an Army cryptologic capability in the office of the Chief Signal Officer, he started with 4 civilian students - Frank Rowlett, Solomon Kullback, Abraham Sinkov and John Hurt, their training lead to the compilation of War Department codes and ciphers and the solution of foreign military and diplomatic codes and ciphers. You can go to the NSA web site and read about the history of crytology. The Army Signal Corps established the 805th Signal Service Company, they were sent to a BTL school, the unit consisted of 81 officers and 275 enlisted, the officers were mostly lieutenants and captains and the enlisted men were technical and master sergeants, this company had the highest average grade of any company in WW2,I have a photo a some of the members: TSgt Jim Atkinson, Lt. Massey, Lt. Golliday, Lt. McWhite, Lt. Chope, MSgt Charlie Haas, SSgt Fred Buck, TSgt O'meil, Staff Sgt Jim Biggerstaff, Sgt Ed Dessert, Staff Sgt Frank Zylius and 'Willy" Wilchenski. Then you had the Navajo Code Talkers. delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Bullen" <fwbullen@discoverymail.co.za> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 20, 2006 4:21 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Signal Corps | Well before WW1, actually - codebreakers have been active as long as codes | have been in use, both in war and in peace. 3. Hi All: The Australians (Eric Nave), British (John Tiltman) & the Dutch (in the Netherlands East Indies) were also intercepting and decoding Japanese messages pre-WWII, see "The Emperor's Codes" by Michael Smith, and these articles (below) from Australia and on John Tiltman. Unfortunately the official histories of the British GC&CS (Bletchley Park) by Hinsley etc do not cover the Japanese (Far East): http://www.awm.gov.au/journal/j35/straczek.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tiltman http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3926/is_200310/ai_n9311691/pg_5 The US Navy tended to be tightfisted with their codebreaking work, both with the US Army (part of the problem pre-Pearl Harbour) and with the British. Yours, John Wilson (New Zealand) > Actually in the early 1930's the US Navy was the only source of intercepted > traffic from the Japanese, the US Army, in the 1930's, also got interested > in crytoanalysis, In 1930 after the collapse of Yardley's New York "Black > Chamber", William F.
