Other interesting uses of foolery during WWII were the use of body doubles. England's Bernard Montgomery, head of the British Eighth Army and later the 21st Army Group, had a double. His created a mess for Supreme HQ, as he liked the bottle a bit too much. Rubber inflatable tanks and other vehicles, which from the air, appeared to enemy planes as the real things. The use of a corpse was used successfully by the British in which a homeless man's body was, upon his death in England, dressed in a British officer's uniform and fake invasion plans were planted on him. The body was set adrift in hopes of being found by the Germans and fooled them into thinking the intended invasion site was other than Normandy. Decoys were used extensively, fake troops and vehicles, fake units, fake radio traffic, even George Patton was used because he had up until May, 1944 gained much public attention for his successful landings in North Africa and the invasion of Sicily. He was believed by the Germans to be the most likely commander of American forces for the invasion of France. The Allies sent him on a whirlwind of activity, giving speeches and being seen intentionally to draw attention to him and away from others. The Americans, for a short time looked into using bats in the war against the Japanese. If was believed that the Japanese possessed buildings which were considered more vulnerable to incendiary devices because of the extensive use of bamboo, paper, etc in their construction. The plan was to attach small incendiary devices to the bats and release them from planes over Japanese cities so they would seek homes and set fires, but was canceled. Just a few. Rick
