    3. Murray, Reverend George Mosley MURRAY, THE RIGHT REVEREND GEORGE MOSLEY, retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. Born April 12, 1919, in Baltimore, Maryland. He moved at an early age to Jefferson County, Alabama, where he was educated in public schools. Graduated in 1940 from the University of Alabama with a B.S. Degree in Commerce and Business Administration. Employed by the General Electric Credit Company in North Carolina for two years. Served four years in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, two years of which were served on board the submarine, U.S.S. Pintado, in the Pacific. Graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, Va. in 1948 with a degree of Master of Divinity. Ordained Priest in the Diocese of Alabama by the Rt. Rev. Charles C.J. Carpenter. Served five years as Episcopal Chaplain at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Elected and consecrated Suffragan Bishop of Alabama in 1953. Elected Bishop Coadjutor of Alabama in 1959. Became the Bishop of Alabama in 1969. Took the lead in organizing the new Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast (South Alabama and Northwest Florida). Became Bishop of the Central Gulf Coast when it was established in 1971. Moved from Birmingham to Mobile to assume direction of the new diocese. Received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award at the University of Alabama in 1953. Received honorary degrees of Doctor in Divinity from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, and from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1954. Received honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Alabama in 1956. Received honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from St. Bernard College, Cullman, Alabama in 1963. Served in the Board on Regents of the University of the South 1959-65 and 1971-77. Elected to the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, headquartered in New York City in 1964. Served as President of the Fourth Province of the Episcopal Church (Southeastern United States) 1971-74. Elected to the Board of Trustees of the Church Pension Fund 1973-83. Elected Vice President of the House of Bishops 1978-80. Admitted to the Alabama Academy of Honor in 1975. Charter member of Mobile United and served as Chairman. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gerard Archibald Murray and Emma Winston Eareckson Murry, as well as his first wife, Elizabeth Malcolm Murray. Survived by wife, Margaret MacQueen Murray; two sons, George Malcolm Murray, of New York, NY and William Gerard Murray of Annapolis, MD; one daughter, Sara Duncan Murray of Paris, France; three step-children, John C. Rockett, III of Gulf Breeze, FL, Margaret Grace Rockett of Silverhill, AL and James MacQueen Rockett of Spanish Fort, AL and several grandchildren. He donated his body to the Anatomical Board of the State of Alabama for use in medical education and research. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that any memorial gifts be given to Wilmer Hall, the Episcopal Home for Children, 3811 Old Shell Road, Mobile, AL 36608. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. from Christ Church Cathedral in Mobile, AL, with a reception to follow service.
