    3. On the Run - After the order to surrender in Battle of Crete by times 2006-April-27 When the order to surrender was given after the Battle of Crete in 1941, more than 6000 Australian, British and New Zealand soldiers were left behind. Some escaped immediately on abandoned naval barges or took to the hills. But the majority was marched back over the White Mountains to makeshift POW camps. Many escaped, relying on Cretan mountain villagers to shelter and guide them. Ian Frazer's father was a survivor of the Battle of Crete, an Australian soldier who successfully evaded the Nazi occupiers for a year. He kept a meticulous diary. ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Smith" <airforce@localdial.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 17, 2006 6:06 AM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Prisoners of War Crete | Crete being in the Mediterranean, fell to the Germans in July 1941 which is | before the Americans entered the war so it would be only British forces on | the Island. | These prisoners would almost certainly be taken to Germany and accomadated | in the Stalags.
