The military kept all kinds of different records on their personnel, one is called the "Individual Deceased Personnel Files" (IDPF) - anyone can get the IDPF on any deceased military under FOIA - there are different bits of information in each file according to the circumstances of the the deceased and how they died. There is a web site where you can fill out the form and mail it in, they do charge, you can ask to have this charge waived, maybe they will if you are related, I know they did not for me, although I have not paid them, the government is not allowed to make money off its records, so they call it "research, copy, etc. fees". The info below is from the web site: World War II Casualty Files "If you would like to find information on any World War II casualty, you can order a copy of the "Individual Deceased Personnel 293 File" (IDPF/293) from U.S. Total Army Personnel Command Center. There are IDPF/293 files for EVERY World War II casualty, ALL branches, i.e., U.S. Army, U.S. Army Air Corps, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. For information related to Merchant Marine Casualties during World War II, contact the U.S. Coast Guard." This site has a form you can print out/fill out and copy and mail, and it does say it takesa while. Now according to the letter I got when I requested copies of the deceased on a research project on a downed aircraft, they told me they only had resources to searhfor 10 files at a time, some of the files may of had as many as 50-60 pages. http://www.geocities.com/lks_friday/HAMILTON-005.htm The address I sent to is different than the one on the web site, mine went to 200 Stovall Street, Alexandria, Va., 22332-0404, but it has beeen a couple of years, so you may want to use the one on the site - also include your e-mail address, as when I requested the copies I got, I forgot to send the names (OK so I am old and forgetful) so the person e-mailed me and the rest was handled thru e-mail. Also the person I dealt with was a Thomas M. Jones, Chief, Freedom of Information and Privacy Act Office, ARMY HUMAN RESOURCES COMMAND. Like I said they will bill you when they send the records. Some of the info I received was about the person, the letter of notification to the listed next of kin, how much pay he/her was entitled and lots of other stuff. Hope this helps, if it does, let me know, I like to know if what I do helps anybody. delilah evans
