If you can find any old photographs of him in which his shoulder patches are clearly visible, remember that the armored division patches were very similar (triangular in shape) but listed the numeric designation at the apex (1-20). It is also possible that he was in an independent tank battalion or similar tank destroyer battalion which was assigned directly to division through army group levels. Many folks referred to them as tanks and can't tell the different between the common Sherman tanks and the various forms of tank destroyers. The letters written home, heraldic crest, or uniforms (Photographs ) will solve this the most quickly. If you find any references to numeric units, please post them. Tank battalions, whether organic to divisions or independent were in numbers typically between 1-812 (example 99th Tank Battalion) but the tank destroyers were seen in series from 601-899 (example 811th TD Battalion). Also, many units can be eliminated from your search solely because the army was, at that time still segregated and units that were African-American are identified as such.Good Luck! Rick

Your cousins' Army Serial Number was 35932589.Year of birth 1922, enlisted 8/31/43. Service with Pattons' 3rd Army won't be of much help because dozens of units served within the various Corps in the European Theater and even the Corps were moved from army to army. The European Theater in which Patton served consisted of the 12th US Army Group (General Omar Bradley) and the 21st Army Group-British(General Bernard Montgomery), US Armies on continent were 1st-Hodges, 3rd-Patton, 9th-Simpson, 15th-Gerow (paper basically) and later the 7th-Patch. A reference to his tank would of course indicate an Armored Division but does not help narrow the search too much, as there were over a dozen US Armored divisions in which he could have served. Remember US divisions strength during WWII was roughly 15,000 men, and each Corps was comprised of between 3-6 divisions, quite a task. My advice would be to check with the courthouses in nearby counties in which he may have lived upon his return, as many vets filed copies of their discharge papers,VFW memberships,State records for service bonuses, and the VA for possible claims files which may yield service units. The easiest way to determine units of assignment would be to check with relatives living who may have letters received from him during wartime, these will yield his unit in abbreviated form but this list can translate for you, or if old uniforms are still existing which may have his division patch or unit heraldic crest which we can also identify. Keep us posted! Rick
My cousin just got the response back from the military - they think the records on her dad were destroyed in that 1973 fire. Is there anywhere else we can get information? What we know is that he was inducted into the service Aug 31 1943 name Oda M.Hart at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. Enlisted for the duration of the War, Civil occupation: concrete mixer-operator, etc. We know he worked in Baltimore Maryland for a time on airplanes. He was living in a trailer and in the military. We are told he was in an army hospital until about February-March of 1946. His knee was injured when his tank ran over a mine (during the time he served under Patton). He was killed in a motorcycle accident less than a month after he got out of the service. I had his serial number but didn't put it into my family tree file and can't find it right now.
