    2. This may also be of some use to you in your research. As you can see, while APO 757 was assigned to Frankfurt in the case of the 7811th SCU-Station Complement Unit, there were several subposts no doubt in the general vicinity and also under the operational control of the Frankfurt sector. Consider searches that focus on ( Occupation Forces,US sector postwar or cold war, station complement units- Germany, constabulary units etc). _http://www.usarmygermany.com/USAREUR%20Military%20Posts.htm_ (http://www.usarmygermany.com/USAREUR%20Military%20Posts.htm) _http://www.usarmygermany.com/US%20Zone%20Mil%20Posts%20Map.htm_ (http://www.usarmygermany.com/US%20Zone%20Mil%20Posts%20Map.htm) _http://www.usarmygermany.com/Sonthofen1.htm_ (http://www.usarmygermany.com/Sonthofen1.htm) Good Luck, Rick

    2. John Wilson
    3. Hi Deb & All: Re William's death, the CWGC site gives his death as "between 30 Jan 1942 & 1 July 1942". The only reason I can think of for such a wide range of possible death dates that he was a Prisoner-of-War, and died as a POW. If he went missing and was then "missing, believed dead" would he have a death date of when he went missing? He is commemorated on the El Alamein Memorial, indicating that his body was not found. 3. Thankyou John & Mary Ann :o))), I could kiss you! William Patrick John JARVIE is my man, I'm pretty certain. West Kensington is the area the family was in and I can't imagine there were too many William Jarvie's of his age to die at El-Alamein whose mother's name was Edith Rose. This will give us more to go on to find any descendants. I don't know what happened to my CWGC search for JARVIEs that came up nil except that I'm having trouble on the site again tonight (giving 0 found where previously had results). Will try again tomorrow (when it's not daytime in UK - seems to be my problem lately). Thanks again, Deb.

    1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] US Army unit identification
    2. I think that you will find that the post-war reference to 7811th SCU is an abbreviation for " Station Complement Unit ". Not to be confused with station complement squadrons. SCU' s were basically constabulary or occupation units created from portions of various units who were even stripped from combat units, for purposes of maintaining civil order. You will see references to AU's, but typically this classification was more common in the 1950's. I'm sure you will find more results on the web with these new search parameters. Rick

    2. D Cook
    3. Thanks John, Mum & I had noticed in our search on the net that it referred to 1942 and now re-reading the letter we think she may have meant that his 21st birthday was in 1941, not that he died in 1941. We had also noticed it was a land battle which confused us looking at the CWGC entry we thought it could have been. If there are no William MARSHs, are there any JARVIEs buried at El Alamein Cemetery? I know his mother remarried a JARVIE but don't know when. Perhaps he had his name (or JARVIE was even his father). I have put those sites under my Military favourites! Thankyou so much for your help, Deb. 2. John Wilson
    3. Hi Deb: For the Battle of El Alamein you should be checking the CWGS for 1942 not 1941, as the First Battle of El Alamein was July 1942, and the (notable) Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. See the Timeline for the North African Campaign, well remembered in New Zealand (we had a Member of Parliament called Alamein Kofu): http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/Gallery/north-africa/time-line.html But there was not a William ... Marsh in the El Alamein Cemetery. El Alamein was a land battle; see re HMS Mashona when William Eric MARSH died: http://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/4431.html Yours, John Wilson (New Zealand) > My Great Grandmother in Australia received a letter from her sister in Kensington England saying that her son Billy (William I would think) MARSH died in El-Alamein in 1941 just after his 21st birthday. He never saw his little girl Betty... sad. His parents were Charles E & Edith MARSH. > > What Regiment/unit might he have been in? > > Would his death be on the BDM Registrations in England? (I have checked page images for quarters in 1941 & 42 - no joy). Could it have been registered way after that? I thought I could remember someone saying there was another list for deaths overseas but am not sure. >

    3. I have his records except POW. He was wounded on Okinawa. Where was he a prisoner of war? He was ashamed of being captured and did not want to talk about it. Could he have been liberated without a record being made of it? Support our defenders of peace. Thanks for reflections. N.W. Richard

    1. English Death El-Alamein 1941 - MARSH
    2. D Cook
    3. Hi all, My Great Grandmother in Australia received a letter from her sister in Kensington England saying that her son Billy (William I would think) MARSH died in El-Alamein in 1941 just after his 21st birthday. I have looked on the CWGC site & only one could be him I think: MARSH, WILLIAM ERIC Initials: W E Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Able Seaman Regiment: Royal Navy Unit Text: H.M.S. Mashona Date of Death: 28/05/1941 Service No: C/SSX 18240 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: 43, 2. Memorial: CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL Has every death known about been put on this site? His mother had obviously been informed. Hoping someone may be able to help me. Not sure where to start. Thanks, Deb. (Australia)
