I just found out this morning that my granny's first cousin, ARTHUR DANIEL KAVANAGH, was in the Royal Navy in WW2. He was a Petty Officer on HMS Searcher. I also found out unfortunately he is buried in the Royal Naval Cemetery in Orkney. He died one month before WW2 ended on the 15th March 1945. Does anyone have any more info or where could I go to get more info. Thanks Cathy Daly
Hello All I'm passing on a request for information on behalf of Howard Fuller, the photo-archivist at the Vale and Downland Museum Wantage. One of their photographs, shows seven named US Servicemen posed outside the Supply HQ near Wantage (then in Berkshire ) probably in early Summer 1944. The USAF were based then at Grove Airfield approx two miles north of Wantage. Their names written on the back of the print are: Lt Chester Clark, Atty. Donald Rosenfeld, Lt Bill Gaydon, Major Leon Yewell, Lt Ray P. Wright, Capt J B Booth and Lt Walter Oberschowski. If you know of a decendant of any of these men or can provided any further information on them please contact myself or Howard Fuller at howard.fuller@ntlworld.com. A digital file copy of the photo attached to an e-mail can be made available. Thank you Trevor Hancock

Sam, While the VA can and does aid individuals in obtaining replacement medals, it is not required that you make the request through them. Any legal next of kin can request a replacement set directly from the military agency of service. In your case, since your father served in the U. S, Army, you may go directly to the NARA website and print out form SF-180. Complete and specifically state, Medals and Awards replacements. Send to: National Personnel Record Center Medals Section (NRPMA-M) 9700 Page Avenue St. Louis, MO. 63132-5100 _http://www.archives.gov/research/order/standard-form-180.pdf_ (http://www.archives.gov/research/order/standard-form-180.pdf) This is the same form in which you can request records if they survived the fire of 1973. Print legibly and include all information, especially the military serial number, and his social security number. His military serial number appears to be 32047613, but you may want to verify it. His SSN can be found on the Social Security Death Index if unknown. _http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtch=13&cat=WR26&tf=F&sc =19685,19709,19686,19687,19688,19753,19696,19698&bc=sl,fd&txt_19709=lashlee&op _19709=0&nfo_19709=V,24,1900&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=2746107&rlst=7629482,939733,16218 70,2066476,2746107,4966628,4973107,4973600,5177221,5419006_ (http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtch=13&cat=WR26&tf=F&sc=19685,19709,19686 ,19687,19688,19753,19696,19698&bc=sl,fd&txt_19709=lashlee&op_19709=0&nfo_19709 =V,24,1900&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=2746107&rlst=7629482,939733,1621870,2066476,2746107 ,4966628,4973107,4973600,5177221,5419006) I also encourage people to include a certified copy of the death certificate and a copy of his separation form , if you have it, if not they will look it up to validate authorized awards. They will validate his death but not your relationship, but understand that a signature constitutes you are NOK and subject to prosecution for perjury for falsification. The VA has nothing to do with the request or delivery. I can see only one potential problem. The military only allows one replacement set to be issued, and so if that request has already taken place and recorded, then you may get turned down. I'm sure you are aware that this process can take months, but if you have no other recourse, I would suggest posting the name of all entitled awards and medals on this list and we will provide you with a link to a color image of the award. You can then take this to any reputable military store or even antique stores and purchase them yourself for $25-$75 a piece. They are easy to locate. Good Luck! Rick

My father passed away in 2001. I went to the web site for the Navy and filled out the forms, printed them and sent them off to the proper office. My mother is still alive and I was given a copy of his papers including his discharge papers. At the same time I requested to have his missing medals reissued to me. I made this request last year. I got the papers with in a couple of months, I just received his medals last week. I did not need permission from my mother, nor did I have any problems in receiving any of the requested information. I put on the form that my father had passed away and that I was his daughter. That's all that I needed to do. I hope that you are able to get what you have requested. It ment a lot to me when the medal arrived in the mail last week.
Is there anyone on this list who knows anything about this WW II base or served there? The local village history group on Drayton St Leonard are interested in any information or personal recollections, photos etc with a view to inclusion in a forthcoming website. Ken Wise
I have been waiting to write to this list about this very problem. My father, Malcolm Griggs Lashlee, was a member of the 44th tank battalion, during WWII. He was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart. He and I filled out the forms to have his missing war medals sent to him in January 2005. He passed away in February 2005. The local veteran's affairs department will not release the medals to me, because his "wife" (yes my mother) is still alive. His wife left him 5 years before he died, to live with someone else, but still stands to collect widows pension and social security because they were still married when he died. Unless the rules have been recently changed, it is possible for the Next of Kin to obtain the records upon proof of death. However, due to privacy regulations, access by second parties to Second War files is possible only if the veteran has been dead for 20 years or more. And proof of decease has to be presented. I have sent a request mail to the LAC and am awaiting their response. On the basis that my grandfather died in 1995 I do not expect them to be very forthcoming so hope somebody out there can assist through knowledge of the units or my grandfather. Hello My name is Angela and I am researching my grandfather Stanley H. BEECHING born 16 Jan 1917. He was in the Canadian forces during World War II and was from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I am searching for Alfred West who was assigned to the 124th Evacuation Hospital in the European Theater during World War II. Can someone on the list tell me how I can find out who was assigned to the 124th Evacuation Hospital during between 1944 and 1946?
Hi John & all, There are a couple of mentions of El-Alamein at Wartime Memories site (I really like this site). http://www.wartimememories.co.uk/africa.html#el-alemein This one relates some confusion ie 'No one was where they should have been...' http://www.wartimememories.co.uk/pow/stalag4g.html This guy was in 124 Field Regt (same as mine) when he was taken POW - confirmed 7 mths after reported missing. http://www.awm.gov.au/journal/j37/alameinreview.htm This Aussie account looks like a good book. Thought I'd mention them in case anyone is interested.
