    3. Rick, Do you think they would accept a request for photos only? I have already received my dad's records and medals, but it never occured to me to ask for photos. With Dad's almost 25 years in service they should have some ID photos. And what about any "official US Army photographs" they may have made? Thanks, Nancy ----- Original Message ----- From: <Snowfrog1961@aol.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 16, 2006 9:50 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Want to request military records > Whether you choose Evets online or the manual SF-180 to request them, you > will have to select between the " Deleted " or " Undeleted ". 2. Whether you choose Evets online or the manual SF-180 to request them, you will have to select between the " Deleted " or " Undeleted ". You will want to choose the " Undeleted ". In the space in the middle, I encourage requestors to include any medical records and any military I.D. photograph. They are rare, but do exist and I have received them for Navy veterans. Rick

    1. The Story of PFC J.P. Stoner/Korea
    2. Delilah
    3. They Served in Silence The Story of a Cryptologic Hero PFC Jay Robert Stoner, USA Kumsong, North Korea, 1953 The morning of July 11th, like all mornings on the Korean battlefront in 1953, came way too early for PFC Jay Stoner and the men of the 304th Communications Reconnaissance Battalion. Stoner had been in Korea for over five months, but he still had not gotten used to the daily artillery barrages and relentless enemy attacks in his sector. He and his buddies almost certainly knew of the rumors that the individuals involved in the "peace talks" at Panmunjan might actually be making progress. But on this July morning, the situation that Stoner and the 304th found themselves in was about as far away from peace as you could get. The early months of 1953 had seen the Chinese Communists step up their attacks along a broad front, with the aim of being in a superior position should the war come to an abrupt end. For this reason, Stoner and the rest of the men in the 304th Communications Group had not had much time to rest that summer. The 304th's primary job was to give the front line infantry units, who were in the thick of the fight, the information they needed to gain an advantage in combat. The unit sought to accomplish this mission by getting close to enemy lines and conducting what was referred to as "low-level intercept." This was the technical name for the process of establishing a front-line intercept site, running a communications line to a fixed bunker further towards the rear, then collecting and forwarding critical information on enemy operations and movements in a timely fashion. The system worked. The plain truth was that many of the GIs in Stoner's sector had lived to see another day due! to the information supplied by his unit. The Attack Although the 304th had many capable analysts at work on the mission, when the lines went down, the whole process ground to a halt. Stoner's role in this process was to keep the lines working. This responsibility must have been on his mind on the morning of the 11th when the expected "incoming mail" began to rain down on his position. Seeking shelter from the shelling, Stoner headed for the fixed bunker with the rest of his crew to wait out the barrage. Despite the intensity of the attack, critical information from the intercept site was continuing to flow back to the bunker. Moments later, however, one heavy salvo hit the sector, and the line went dead. Stoner did not know it, but the heavy fire his unit was facing was part of an orchestrated attack by the Communist Chinese on the 8th Army's main line of resistance. Without the tactical information culled from the site, American soldiers would die. Someone had to fix the line. That someone turned out to be Jay Stoner. Beginnings Jay had always loved telephones. He had joined the color guard of the school band at Manor Millersville High School and had other interests as well, but his passion was communications - telephone communications to be exact. His father, a skilled tradesman himself, was impressed with Jay's knowledge but was not overly found of his "experiments" - which included taping into the family phone line and running a block-long telephone line to the neighbor's house down the street. After high school, Jay wanted nothing more than to work for the phone company; however, the year was 1952, and Pennsylvania Bell was hesitant to spend time and money on someone who was so well suited for induction. Jay briefly settled for a job with the local RCA office. He soon realized that it was only a matter of time before Uncle Same would come calling. With this in mind, he took matters into his own hands and enlisted in the Army. Service and Sacrifice Leaving the safety of the bunker with Yong Koo, his technical assistant, Stoner crawled along the line searching for the break. The shelling intensified. Even so, he was able to locate the damage. He quickly took out the needed material from his kit and repaired the line. The intercept station was back in business. So far, so good. Now it was time to get back to the safety of the bunker as quickly as possible. The rounds were now falling much too close for comfort; shrapnel was flying everywhere. He cautioned Yong Koo, to stay low. Both men cautiously began the journey back to safety. As they came within 100 yards of the bunker, Stoner was struck down. Requiem Jay would never know that his courageous actions had come at a critical time and that his efforts had contributed to saving the lives of many of his fellow soldiers on the front lines. Nor would he ever receive the long-awaited letter from his sister, Anna Jane, informing him that his prayers had been answered-he was finally going to be an uncle. Most troubling, perhaps, was the fact that 16 days later, at 10:12 p.m., the war would finally come to a close. PFC Stoner's death serves as a stark reminder that the practice of cryptology can be a dangerous one, and that courage and bravery, as well as talent and intelligence, are often required to get the job done. Because of his sacrifice, and that of thousands of others like him, millions of men, women, and children today live in freedom on the Korean peninsula. PFC Stoner's actions serve as an eternal reminder that the servicemen and women who risk their lives on the front are not only the backbone of our armed forces, but the guarantors of our American way of life. Jay Robert Stoner Private First Class, United States Army 1932-1953 Purple Heart (posthumous) Bronze Star Medal with 'V' Device (posthumous) Korean Service Medal with 1 bronze service star United Nations Service Medal

    1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] My Father and the Battle of the Bulge
    2. Kevin, Have you requested his records from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis? Much of the U.S. Army records were lost in the fire of 1973 but maybe they have something. You may get his Report of Separation which will list geographic regions of assignment/dates, medals/awards,campaigns, and other units of assignment. If not: _http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/standard-form-180.h tml_ (http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/standard-form-180.html) Print out a form SF-180, fill out all known information, especially the military serial number, SSN #,branch, and date of birth. You will need his signature on the form if he is still living, but you may request, if he has passed. The law allows you to, as legal next of kin. I can tell you that his primary job was most likely not that of guarding prisoners, but rather ship to shore movement of supplies to feed to appetite of the armies moving eastward toward Germany. After the capture of major port facilities at Cherbourg and Antwerp replaced the unloading of supplies directly over the invasion beaches and subsequent transportation via the " Red Ball " routes, the port companies were used in other jobs. The two most needed were: 1) support units were stripped to obtain infantry and armor personnel replacements 2) guarding and processing of the overwhelming amount of German POW's flooding to the west, to surrender to the American or British forces instead of the Russians There is a good possibility that is the case, but contact the unit alumni to see if they printed a unit history and that will cover their training and combat duties and experiences. Here is a link to the unit alumni contact: _http://www.military-network.com/Ben/Associations_Detail.cfm?ID=4221_ (http://www.military-network.com/Ben/Associations_Detail.cfm?ID=4221) Good Luck, Rick

    2. Robin's wool
    3. Thanks to input from this list and others I have filled in some of the gaps in the events. To recap .. This is about my uncle John KING CERA RN who was went missing on the night of 27 October 1943 from HMS Albatross. What I have now established is ... Albatross was then in Devonport having arrived on 6 October from Bombay and Mombassa (where she had 'disembarked her Walruses and all aviation stores ' quote from short history of HMS Albatross supplied by Naval historical Branch Portsmouth) Albatross was 'reduced to care and maintenance a month after arrival in Devonport. The body of John KING was found on 7 November in the area of Richmond Walk only a mile or so down stream. I have the Coroners report which contains witness statements. The body was in a 'very decomposed condition' and in 'ERA's working uniform'. 'He was last seen about 11 pm on board ship. By 12 midnight someone heard a scream and then he was found to be missing. Search was made.' Albatross 'was then in HM Dockyard Devonport' ...being 27 October. He was buried at 11 o'clock on Armistice day 11 November 1943 with 'Naval Honours' ( my father's note after attending the funeral) So it seems he fell overboard while working ay night ... Now a few more questions ... Would HMS Albatross be actually moored in the river or berthed? Would a ships records include notes of such details .. And (more likely) the loss of a CERA? I understand any records from HMS Albatross will now be at National Archives in Kew. Anyone know where I can find out the weather conditions on the night of 27/28 October 1943 in Devonport? Many thanks for the help Regards Robin

    3. Greetings, Have you tried looking for his service records? Newspapers of the area? Perhaps one needs to go back to the known and proven facts. How do you know that his name is John Johnson? Is this on any sort of birth, marriage, or death certificate? I looked in the British Vital Records Index CD's, but they stop around 1900. (There was one entry for 1905 from Cumberland. There was 5178 listings for John Johnson, less if one takes exact spelling. Regretfully census records are not available to cover 1905 at present. Just possible avenues to look into. She has no information about her father, other than her parent's marriage certificate giving the usual details. This is not proving as easy as it may seem. There is a possibility her father was born in Scotland, and his name JOHN JOHNSTONE is very common. She can remember, however, his conscription in 1939 to what we think would be the EAST SURREY REGIMENT. Does anyone know if it's possible to get copies of conscription papers, or indeed if these papers would give place of birth? He was in fact discharged a few month's later because he was hard of hearing, so there is a possibility of Discharge Papers as well, but I have no idea what information they hold either! > >Yours hopefully (and very frustatedly) > >Julie > > >==== WORLDWAR2 Mailing List ==== >Please do not send virus warnings to the list.
