I'm trying to find out what unit my father-in-law was in and where he might have been stationed in WWII... his name was Corporal Henry Louis Lairson, 18 013 976, Regular Army, , Sept 1940 to August 2, 1945, Enlistment City, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Field Artillery, supposedly seperated out to Fort Sam Houston, Bexar County, Texas.... Honorable Discharge.... I am trying to find a copy of his DD-214 ( or what ever they called it then ) ... so I can re-order any medals that he may have received.... St Louis sent me a copy of his Certifcate of Service, but it only gives the basic info that I have above... anyone with info pleas help....I have check with Bexar County, and Nueces County ( supposedly home of record) at their County Clerks office for registered info, but no one seems to know what I'm talking about.......thank you.....Judy Lairson judy_lairson2000@yahoo.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <KathNHNC71@aol.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 25, 2006 10:22 AM Subject: [WORLD WAR II] Family buries remains of WWII airman discovered on California mountain > > > Family buries remains of WWII airman discovered on California mountain > By PATRICK CONDON > The Associated Press > > > _http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2002888242_frozen25.html_ > (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2002888242_frozen25.html) > > > ==== WORLDWAR2 Mailing List ==== > To post queries/answers to the list, send an email to: > WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com We are an international list. What Rick says is pretty much true for UK, although I cannot recall ever coming across a newspaper report over here covering training and unit assignments. Sometimes a newspaper would print part of a letter received from a man 'in the field', but it either did not mention the unit (except in the broadest terms - 'Private Smith is serving with the Essex Regiment') or location, or if it did it would then be some months out of date. Even air raids, while giving names of victims and sometimes street names, would identify the town very vaguely ('a coastal town in the south-east'). All this, of course, was designed not to provide useful feedback to the enemy. Nonetheless, UK newspapers are indeed a valuable source. Particularly where a man or woman was killed in the line or duty, it was commonplace to give a brief biography, often accompanied by a picture. Names of parents, spouse, children, siblings, etc. are often mentioned. If he/she had died on home soil and the next-of-kin could afford to have the body brought to the hometown for burial, the newspaper would often carry a lengthy report of the burial/memorial service, listing names and relationship to the deceased of family who attended. And the birth/marriage/death columns are always worth checking - many newspapers started a separate 'war deaths' or similar title classified column during both World Wars. Local newspapers are excellent sources for military information. It was very common for towns/county papers to print information about service members before, during, and after training with information regarding training places and units of assignment. They also would frequently mention those who has received awards, and who had been wounded or killed in action. It was common to mention the parents names and their address. Although they didn't always print a photograph, those that did usually had a copy of one from a military source. So be sure to check the local libraries in or near their wartime address. Any local librarian will be glad to help you view the wartime issues of their newspapers on the microfilm equipment. Remember, the names of the papers may have changed due to mergers or buyouts. So check with the local library if you run into that situation. Rick
If they don't have the records due to the fire are they still able to find what medals a person received? II was unable to get my fathers. They just sent his discharge papers which I all ready had. But I wanted to share something. I sent for my GGGrandfather's pension file and civil war records from NARA. I received aabout a 2 inch legal sized paper file. It contained everything I ever wanted to know about him and my GGGrandmother because she was fighting to get his pension after he died. I was amazed at the great lengths they went to deny her. They collected affidavits from people who knew them growing up. Birth marriage and death records for them and their children. And information about other relatives and friends. It was amazing. And it was amazing that they still had all of this information on file. I knew nothing about them when I sent for it. Barbara Rossow
I have had very good results with the online form and faxing a signed copy as soon as I submit the online form. I have received all requests including photos of my father. Judy
For those that are using the on-line SF180 form to request records, if you fill it out on-line and submit it, the you have to print out one and sign it so they will know it is not just somebody doing something, then they match the requests when they receive them. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Snowfrog1961@aol.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 18, 2006 11:38 AM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Want to request military records | Nancy, | | I would agree with Paul. I am looking for a WWII USMC cap badge. Does anyone have one for sale? How do you tell the age of them? Is there any differences in them from WWII - Korea - to now? Thanks. Bill White
Nancy: Keep this in mind. While you may find photos in a pers. file, it would be better to look in the unit that issued the awards by date of iissue. That is for each award he received there would be an order to issue the award posted in his 201 file . All records of awards are permanent files ! ie held in archives. Give the NARA the unit and date of the order, ask about photos. Then request olnly those that have photos Paul HInkle Nancy <fishin@outdrs.net> wrote: Rick, Do you think they would accept a request for photos only?
