    1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] Canadian Info

    3. Very pleased for you, Muriel. My big problem is that I was illegitimate and then adopted, so have no 'claim' to my father under Canadian law. When I first started looking I did not have his full name, service number, rank and unit and the authorities just did not want to know. Subsequently, by other means, I did get much of the information and I do now have a copy of his record, but around 50% of it is blacked-out, including all the genealogical information! So, not a great deal of use to me. Anyway, glad that it worked out better for you. 3. Would there be old newspapers in the libraries in Canada that may have stories of the war - I would think you could find info on the units as they wrote many stories of the miilitary at war - there may even be a book or something about the particular unit ----- Original Message ----- From: "esx goring" <esx@goring1941.freeserve.co.uk> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2006 8:48 AM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Canadian Info | Things are not much better this side of the Atlantic, Sal. 3. I think you may be wrong on the not have "claim" - all adoptees are supposed to have all rights, etc. as any natural born child - hope what you say is not true in Ca, as I know in the US, it is not true. ----- Original Message ----- From: "esx goring" <esx@goring1941.freeserve.co.uk> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2006 8:43 AM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Canadian Info | Very pleased for you, Muriel. 3. Hi again, as we are on the subject , once again , of accessing servicemens records, here in the UK , the National Archives Customer Liaison officer Joe Kelly has emailed me to say that the NA are in current discussions with MOD to digitise the records . He says they will eventually come under the NA but are still in use by MOD for pension enquiries, medal enquiries etc , and he seemed to me to confirm that the records would automatically be opened 100 yrs after the birth of the serviceman , but that they were working on the idea of digitising and opening prior to that . I still think , that barring a digital miracle, that we shall still have to wait until 2020 ..........................

    3. Hi Richard: Thank you for your reply. I know it's literally impossible for me to anything from the Cdn govt re my uncles. Four of my five uncles have not been deceased for the 20 year requirement. Also, I was told I either have to have their service record number OR their social insurance number. I have neither. It is sad that Americans can get so much more info than we can get here in Canada. I just keep hoping for a miracle.............Sal ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "esx goring" <esx@goring1941.freeserve.co.uk> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 25, 2006 4:29 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Canadian Info > Hi, Sally. > > I do not offer encouraging news. 3. Thank you for the official names of the regiments. I have spent many many hours searching for where, when & what the Highland Lt Infantry of Cda did overseas from 1940 to the end of the war and have gathered a good bit of their history. A lot of it has made me cry. Now I have started on the Royal Cdn Engineers and there doesn't seem to be much on the net but I'm just starting. I was only 7 years old when the war ended. I remember spending a weekend visit at my grandmother's where one of my uncles was living. I woke up in the middle of the night to hear him screaming. My grandmother told me he was having a "bad dream". She told me my other uncles had "bad dreams" too. I didn't understand then. Now, as I read more and more about World War II I can only imagine what those nightmares were. 3. Hi, Sally. I do not offer encouraging news. I have been trying to get hold of my Canadian father's service details for some years, but have been denied. All the Canadian World War II service records are still closed to the public and will remain so for many years yet - UNLESS you are the serviceman concerned or immediate next-of-kin and can satisfy the authorities that he/she is dead or can show that the person has been dead 20 or more years. And without service numbers the Canadian National Archives people will not even look for records. 3. Greeting... I also did not have my fathers complete information- but requested both under Freedom of Information.. and DVA... all I need was proof of dad being deceased- which I provided with headstone... Can not remember Canadian Web site, that I was. I had to wait almost a year, but well worth it.. and very exciting to follows dad's military service..I think it also asked about family relation, plus not sure but there is a death time line for information. Good Luck hunting. M
