    2. Harvie Barker
    3. Dear listers: I am looking for information about airfields/other military bases WW2 at Mablethorpe/Lincolnshire. My friend's father was British by birth born 1918 at Southend on sea/Essex. He was in 1936 in Regular Army Reserve, Bedfs & Herts. He had been "late Cadet, Bedford School contgt Jun. Div OTC..maybe someone could explain what that means to me? My friend's parents were married at Mablethorpe in 1941 and their address was THE RETREAT, Windsor road. His father was listed as "Army Officer" -he had been in Lincolnshire regiment, but by 1942 he appeared as "retired" but I know he was a radiographer and did this work for many years in the War, including Hiroshima. thus, not sure why the word "retired" would appear. I am looking for information about Mablethorpe and the type of action/military units there in 1941. Was there any bombings/civilian deaths there in 1942? thanks for your help, Liz of BC Canada

My question was why his height and weight were listed as 43 and 386 respectively on the WWII enlistment records on Ancestry.com. I thought it was metric but it doesn't convert to a believable number using Kilograms and Centimeters and have never heard if they were using metric measurements in WWII. 2. John Wilson
    3. Hi All: The American whose body was found recently in the Solomons was a soldier not an airman, Private Martin Odenthal, who died on 10 January 1943 in the Battle of Guadalcanal. His brother Albert died later on Guadalcanal, and another brother Ralph in the Navy was sent home after news of the deaths came through. His unmarked grave could not be found after the war, but his remains and dog tag were found by Sam Besi from the village of Barana recently, and were sent back to America last week. Also 35 used shells from his M1 Garrand rifle. A New Zealand Regional Assistance (Ramsi) Police team assisted in the return. (Dominion Post of 24 March 2006; Wellington NZ). 1. civilian deaths from bombings England? 1942
    2. Harvie Barker
    3. I am wondering how to search for civilian deaths by bombings in July 1942 at Peterboro? I have a story of a baby rescued from a bombing of his house shortly after his birth. He was born july 14, 1942 at Louth Hospital and there were NO bombings/ or civilian deaths in 1942 there...[yes, in 1941 and 1943] I realize this "story" can sound a bit suspicious. apparently the mother survived because she was OUT and other members of the household [possibly her family?] were supposed to be killed. The baby was susequently placed in an orphanage. I did expect local newspapers to carry such a story..finding none...but there were certainly stories of the day describing the 1941 bombings and deaths of civilians. I have the birth cert. -- the mother registered the birth 2 weeks after "by declaration" and her address at registration time was 270 Cromwell road, Peterboro. None of the mother's immediate family show up in GRO indexes either for 1942 although I do not know all their names. I tried CWGC site for cemeteries at Peterboro and found NO deaths that seem to relate and NONE from one family. Louth authorities [archives and library ] have been most helpful in confirming no deaths there 1942. I look forward to your wisdom on how to search this for Peterboro. My friend hasnt given up on his life story but has asked me to help find his mother's family. thanks liz of BC Canada

My big problem is that I was illegitimate and | then adopted, so have no 'claim' to my father under Canadian law. Subsequently, by other | means, I did get much of the information and I do now have a copy of his | record, but around 50% of it is blacked-out, including all the genealogical | information! 1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] Canadian Info

    3. Hi Delilah: There are very few digitized old newspapers available in Canada so far. The Toronto Star & The Globe & Mail (Toronto) are available through most libraries. Not my library though as I live in a very small mining town in norther Ontario that was only built in 1953. I live 200 kms from the nearest city & they charge a ridiculously high annual fee for out of towners like me. Fortunately, I can share a friend's (who lives in a city) library card number sometimes for these two papers. Most importantly though, most papers printed very little in their papers in the 1940's. I guess for security reasons. They did print lists & sometimes small articles about wounded, killed, or MIA's. The articles are all very brief. That is where I found a very small one about 4 of my 5 uncles including one that was wounded on Juno Beach on D-Day. Small towns would have had more complete articles if it was about someone from that town -- unfortunately these papers are not on the web. I have found more info on the net in the last few years from some people who have written memoires, etc. Also, the History Channel here in Canada has a lot of historical war movies even if they sometimes embellish the true facts. During the war and after, adults didn't speak much about the war in our hearing for fear of frightening us. In school in the 1950's, we were not told very much about World War II other than dates & generic facts. Especially, we weren't told about things that might have been too shocking for us young kids. WWII was treated the same as any other war. However, we do make a big fuss about honouring our fallen soldiers and surviving veterans on November 11th every year. Since there are fewer and fewer veterans left now, I have noticed the ceremonies are slowly diminishing. I do think we will always respect the two minute silence at eleven am on that day forever. I truly hope so. Our children & grandchildren know next to nothing about the personal aspects of WWII though and this is sad. That is why I am trying so desparately to find out as much as I can document about my 5 Cdn uncles who served overseas. I don't want them to ever be forgotten. Thanks for letting me ramble on like this..............Sal ----- Original Message ----- From: "Delilah" <diamond6468@mindspring.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2006 2:04 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Canadian Info > Would there be old newspapers in the libraries in Canada that may have > stories of the war - I would think you could find info on the units as they > wrote many stories of the miilitary at war - there may even be a book or > something about the particular unit > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "esx goring" <esx@goring1941.freeserve.co.uk> > To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2006 8:48 AM > Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Canadian Info > > > | Things are not much better this side of the Atlantic, Sal. 3. Things are not much better this side of the Atlantic, Sal. Much the same rules and secretive 'logic' apply to the UK as to Canada. We do now have a Freedom of Information Act, but it is not a lot of help on matters like this. Do kep plugging away, though, and console yourself with the thought that at some future date - I suspect around 15 years - the WWII Canadian service records will finally be released to the public domain.
