If it was on the back road into Lossiemouth from Lhanbryde and Urquhart and very close to a wood my grandad used to be one of the boilerman there. Sorry can't remember the name of the base Grandad lived at Rutherhill near Lhanbryde and one day a german pilot upturned his plane and shouted out of the cockpit that they wood be back. Mum remembers they were all in the field and she said that he came so low that they all ducked down. Not much help in regards your query - more a family histoy remembrance of the time. regards Carol www.wakefieldfhs.org.uk Wakefield Family History Sharing ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Monks" <arethusa@shaw.ca> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 01, 2006 6:52 PM Subject: [WORLD WAR II] RAF AIRFIELDS IN SCOTLAND > Greetings, > > My father was posted to Scotland as an RAF aircraftsman. There were 6 airfields within a 15 mile radius of the town of Lossiemouth during WW2: Lossiemouth airfield, NJ207695, 1.75 miles WSW of the town of Lossiemouth. Milltown airfield, NJ266657, 3.5 miles SE of the town of Lossiemouth, and 3.5 miles NE of Elgin. Dallachy airfield, NJ365635, 3.25 miles NNE of Fochabers, and 9.3 miles E of the town of Elgin. Forres airfield, NJ020580, 1 mile WSW of the town of Forres Elgin or Bogs O' Mayne airfield, NJ200604, 2 miles SW of the town of Elgin You can see a modern map of each one if you go to the ordnance Survey's Get-a-map page at http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm and by inputting the grid reference (eg NJ207675) into the search box at the top left. The first four are still marked as airfields, whilst the last two are not. You can zoom the maps out and in, and seeing them may well jog your memory of the area. My grandfather ran the print room at 'codename Hillside' , a target map making facility for Bomber Command. He worked there from about 1941 to 1945. He worked there as a civilian. I am seeking information about the role of 'Hillside' during the war, with particular emphasis on trying to locate his personnel file. I have contacted the Ministry of Defence, National Archives, and the RAF without luck. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks, James. --------------------------------- New Yahoo! Rick, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by flooding and lifting, but do have a rudimentary knowledge of how they worked. There are a few things on the Internet that show them in action. Are your pages in digital form, so that you could possibly share them with me? I also have some photos, which I'd be glad to share. Hi Barb, What ship are you talking about. I have rosters for USS Lagrande and USS LCS (L) (3) 46. Dee
Barb, I have an aerial photo of the training center at Tiburon Cove, an in-hull photo of a sister ship (ARD-13), and close up photo of sister ship (ARD-14), as well as a few pages of basic ARD dimensions, capacities and duties. Also photo of Apra Harbor with breakwater and approx. a dozen assorted photos of various facilities on Guam. Do you know the general functions of ARD's, flooding, lifting? Rick
Barb, Is there any information regarding this ship that you need? Size, dimensions, normal complement, fate, etc? Rick
Rick, No, I have most of the specs, and do know the ship's fate. It was sold (maybe to South America)...somewhere I have the info on that, but can't recall it at the moment. What I'd like to have is information about exactly where the ship went (into battles?), and how (always towed?), and what duties the men aboard had. My father was a metalsmith, but who knows what else? I have heard bits and pieces of things, but nothing concrete. I understand that while anchored at Guam, the men had "beach duty", which I'd like to know more about. I do have my father's service records, but of course, there's not much information there. He was trained at the Naval Drydock Training Center in Tiburon, CA. Apparently, that facility no longer exists. Whatever information might come along would be hugely appreciated. Have tried to find someone in charge of reunions, but the man listed died several years ago. Thanks... Thank you very much! How did you do all that so quickly? On the Navy site, I actually submitted that photo of the ARD-24. Have found the page about the eventual sale of the ship, also, but no more. I heard from Leif Sederholm's grandson about a year ago, and we corresponded for a while. He doesn't know anything about the ship or its activities either, though. Also heard from the son or grandson of another crew member, who also doesn't know anything either, but would like to. It's very frustrating, as these ships were apparently considered "secret weapons", and everything about them was classified for many years. Now, nothing remains in the National Archives, so there's no information to be had from there. I just keep hoping against hope that one of the crew members might still be alive. I know the chances are slim, and getting slimmer by the day. Thanks again for all your valuable input! ARDs were Auxiliary Repair Drydocks, and did *not* have any other name except USS ARD and a number. ARD-24 was stationed in the Pacific, docked at Apra Harbor, Guam. It repaired mostly submarines. I've obtained the deck log, which is very scant. | I'm going to list the names of the men who were on this ship, in hopes that some of them, or their families, might happen across this message. I do have each of their service numbers. It was a relatively small crew, so I hope you can bear with me. If you are, or know, or know about any of the men on this list, or about this ship, please contact me. | | USS ARD 24 | | Commanded by L.Sederholt | Lieutenant (jg) Thomas R. Hello, For years, I've been trying to find information about my dad's US Navy ship and its activities. I write here every year or so, just to see if someone might've wandered in who knows about it. The ship was USS ARD-24.
