    1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] RAF AIRFIELDS IN SCOTLAND
    2. Peter Monks
    3. Greetings, You wanted expeiences of war time happenings? When the war broke out we were living, I think, at 78 Tolcarne Drive, Northwood Hills, Pinner Middlesex. I do not remember much of the war, only that I was an 'expert' on enemy or friendly aircraft (whether right or wrong I still don't know.) We had two air raid shelters (a Morison and an Anderson), one was under the dining room table, it was a steel cage--the idea being that if the house collapsed, the table would take the brunt of the house fall and the steel cage would back it up. The second was a 'standard' corrigated iron semi circular affair that was half burried in the back garden and covered with soil. The one in the garden was often full of stagnent water, frogs etc. that took up residence. 1941 My mother, at second marriage to Bernard Russell, was an assistant engineer G.P.O. (General Post Office) and was installing the top secret 'scrambler' phones in places like Winston Churchill's office and the Admiralty war office. (Bernard went to Egypt with the RAF Winston Specials.) Mum said that she was 'bombed out' 3 times and 'blown up' in the street 5 times, or greater numbers depending on the discussions and occasion--traumatic at any time.Mostly the councilling was "Have a cuppa tea, love, and you'll feel better." Why would anyone desire a list like this?? There are four lines of information per name or someone, not me, would have to type over 536 lines of text. Easier to write to your Archives to obtain a list. Trevor

    3. There were a lot of what was supposed to be luxury liners that were taken and used to transport troops. The first SS Queen and SS Mary were two. 3. My husband crossed over in 1944 on the Queen Mary. All the pretty trimmings had been removed and it was pretty bare. The swimming pool was covered over.

I know that the American ship Wakefield sailed about the same time but I have heard that there was an English ship which left Boston P of E carrying American troops. Thanks Jessie, Calif

Trying to conduct research is proving very difficult due to the fact that it was a top secret facility. It sounds an interesting project - apart from "Hillside", do you know if the unit that was based there had a designation, like "12 Topographic Unit"? (I made this up just now, so don't go hunting for it!) If that is known, it may be possible to find operational records regarding the facility in the catalogue of the National Archives at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp?j=1 See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=155 for a leaflet about some of these records. Looking at your two previous posts, if he was a civilian, then I don't think there's much chance of finding his personnel record. As far as I know, personnel records for civilian Government employees are not available, although I'd be very interested to know if they are. Have you tried the RAF Museum at Hendon? See http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/research/index.cfm for their research page. You also mention earlier that an Army officer, Major Quaiffe, commanded the unit. The Army List for Jan 1943 lists a Captain A P Quaife of the Royal Engineers. He is shown as being a General Staff Officer Grade 3 (GSO3) on a Regular Army Emergency Commission working for the Department of the Chief of the Imperial General Staff of the War Office, and he certainly fits the bill nicely. He would have been a civilian before the war, and no doubt had special skills which were needed by the War Office. He (and indeed your grandfather) may have worked for the Ordnance Survey, which is the UK Government mapping agency - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordnance_Survey and http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/media/features/introos/ The London Gazette at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveSearch.asp?WebType=0&Referer=WW1 shows that Adrian Patrick Quaife joined the Royal Engineers in WW2, but had previously been an officer in the Dorsetshire Regiment in WW1. He was awarded the MBE in the 1944 Birthday Honours List as a Captain (Temporary Major). The Royal Engineers are the Army's mapping and survey specialists, so a commission with them ties in very well. See 3/4 of the way down http://www.remuseum.org.uk/rem_his_special.htm and also http://www.remuseum.org.uk/rem_research.htm Major Quaife died on 19 Sep 1971, and The Times of 24 Sep 1971 carried a death notice for him. Sorry I don't have anything about Hillside or Hughenden Manor, but the above might give you some leads to follow. Forrest -- Forrest Anderson, Edinburgh, Scotland. 3. I did a research project with a lady who lives in Suffock, England - there was a mid air explosion of an American bomber and she was wanting to see if we could find some descendants of those who died, the plane was ferrying the troops back to home station (Tibenham) and just exploded - they were making a memorial to the men and wanted to see if any ancestors existed to come to the memorial - This was on Oct 15, 1944, time-1540 - place was 2 miles SW of Birkenhead, Liverpool. The type and model of the aircraft was a B-24H, AFSN 42-50347, Station AAR Station 124. With the 8th AF, 445th Bomb Group, 703rd Bomb Sq. O'Kell, Old Hall Farm, Landican. Other people who made statements: There is a lot more to the report, it tells what type parachute they had, who and which ambulance carried them to the hospital, where their bodies were in the aircraft, who and where the aircraft was built, the last time and results the aircraft was tested. In the personal reports of each are their next of kin, where they were buried, what was sent home, everything about the person, even how much he was owed in salary. Now do not ask me how I came to get this and from whom. BTW, the movie star Jimmie Stewart was a member of this unit. delilah, Capt. retired
