Hi! I enjoyed your reminiscences of wartime life in Pinner. On September 3rd, 1939, we were just unpacking our things having t(the previous day) moved into our "new" house at 21 Tudor Gardens, West Acton - not all that far from Pinner. We broke for a cup of tea and turned on the radio, only to hear Neville Chamberlain's broadcast annaouncing that we were at war with Germany. The previous year, my brother and I, as Scouts then living in Hornhurch, Essex, had assisted in the distribution and fitting of gasmasks to the local people. We also had an Anderson shelter, in our back garden at West Acton and, later, a Morrison shelter (the one under the dining room table. The sides were not solid steel sheet, but thick wire, welded in squares about 4 inches vertically and horizontally). One (long) side lifted up for access. My father's office was in Old Change, a narrow street off Cheapside, in the City, just round the corner from St. Paul's Cathedral. By the end of the war, that office building was an island in a sea of devastation. I could stand at the corner, looking across Cheapside and the bombed sites on the other side of the road, and had clear view of a few similar masonry islands stretching N.N.E. for nearly a mile. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Geoff Lewin BLAXALL" <Geoff-Blaxall@beeb.net> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2006 11:16 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] What iot was like for civvies > Dear Peter, > Your Mum was an "FEA" [Female Engineering Assistant] > As a lad I worked with many of 'em ! > Geoff > All e-mails protected by Mailwasher + Norton AV2005. > ============================================ > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Peter Monks > To: WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2006 7:24 PM > Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] RAF AIRFIELDS IN SCOTLAND > > > Greetings, > > You wanted expeiences of war time happenings? > > When the war broke out we were living, I think, at 78 Tolcarne Drive, > Northwood Hills, Pinner Middlesex. Jessie, One other thing, you need to know that the military used a convoy coding system during WWII with letter and number designations, which were determined by ports of origin and destination. This site may also help you, you can search by date of sailing or arrival. If you can find the convoy code designation you may be able to find the name of all ships in convoy and begin to eliminate names until you get your match. Try cross referencing your ships with the troopship.pier90 site too. _http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/_ (http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/) Rick
Jessie, Refer to NARA group 336.3.1, which is the " Records of the Ports of Embarkation ". You will see in the listing that the records of the POE, Boston, MA 1941-1946 and any others for that matter. This will definitely be your best source of information regarding specific unit shipments>military records at the National Archives. Check with them about obtaining copies of the textual records or consider hiring a local researcher near the center to make copies of shipment records for that month and year, for you for a fee. _http://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-records/groups/336.html#336.3.1_ (http://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-records/groups/336.html#336.3.1) Rick

Dear Peter, Your Mum was an "FEA" [Female Engineering Assistant] As a lad I worked with many of 'em ! When the war broke out we were living, I think, at 78 Tolcarne Drive, Northwood Hills, Pinner Middlesex. I do not remember much of the war, only that I was an 'expert' on enemy or friendly aircraft (whether right or wrong I still don't know.) We had two air raid shelters (a Morison and an Anderson), one was under the dining room table, it was a steel cage--the idea being that if the house collapsed, the table would take the brunt of the house fall and the steel cage would back it up. The second was a 'standard' corrigated iron semi circular affair that was half burried in the back garden and covered with soil. The one in the garden was often full of stagnent water, frogs etc. that took up residence. 1941 My mother, at second marriage to Bernard Russell, was an assistant engineer G.P.O. (General Post Office) and was installing the top secret 'scrambler' phones in places like Winston Churchill's office and the Admiralty war office. (Bernard went to Egypt with the RAF Winston Specials.) Mum said that she was 'bombed out' 3 times and 'blown up' in the street 5 times, or greater numbers depending on the discussions and occasion--traumatic at any time.Mostly the councilling was "Have a cuppa tea, love, and you'll feel better." Hi to all... Just posting in general reference. My dad served in the Navy in World War II in the South Pacific. His name was Ellis Wayne Diggs...his nickname was Sammy! He served in several different locations. I have out the information on our family website if some are interested. Perhaps my dad served with your dad, uncle, brother or other family members. I have listed all the places and dates he served. I do not have all the information I would like to know...but my search continues. Seems he was a small boat operator and transported soldiers to the beaches when they were fighting the war. I know for a fact that he traveled on a troopship named the "Day Star" across the equator May of 1944. Hopefully someone may recognize the name or knows of somebody that served with my dad. Here is the web page you can link to and get some of my dad's history. When you get to the bottom of the scroll you will see another link that has pictures and documents. I have located pictures of the troopship "Day Star". You can view them on my sight also. _ELLIS W. I live in Lakeland, Florida, this week the local airfield is holding what they call The Sun N Fun Fly In. I live in the fields flight path. For the last half hour I have been watching about a fifty or sixty World War II era aircraft flying in 2 formations, 4 by 4. They all look similar but I am not an expert on aircraft so can not tell what they are. Those in one formation seem bigger than those in the other. I have gotten all the neighborhood dogs upset from my screaming, yelling and jumping up and down. lol Sherry
I know about the Wakefield as it is the only one I can find which matches the dates that my husband gave. I assumed it must have carried the 1261st Engineer Combat Battalion as well as the others mentioned but If the Queen Mary sailed at about the same time I could have been mistaken. Now I need the sailing dates for the Queen Mary in November of 44. If anyone was in the 1261st Engineer Combat Battalion and remembers the name of the ship , I would appreciate hearing from them.
