    3. Hi Forrest! Wow! What can I say, but thank you very much for this very informative and very successful query. I am elated that finally I have found some information on Denis C Riddle. This definitely appears to be the same man. I will include all the details for my cousin's husband who is named for his father, so he can apply for his service record. I did look at the War Graves Commission site and found an uncle of Denis' who died at the Somme, France, but I didn't know about the London Gazette. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I very much appreciate your efforts to answer my query. Best wishes, Judy Forrest wrote: Forrest Anderson <listmail@military-researcher.com> There are at least three announcements in respect of Denis Charles RIDDLE, and they relate to his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals in 1943, the award of the Territorial Efficiency Medal in 1947, and the award of the first clasp to the Territorial Efficiency Medal, also in 1947. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] my uncles
    2. Bobbi, Before you can get specific answers regarding your great uncle, first we will need you to tell us which 714th battalion he was in in. There are different variations which can apply. For instance , 714th Tank Battalion, 714th Transportation Battalion, 714th Quartermaster Battalion, 714th Railway Operating Battalion, just to name a few. Mention of Patton's third Army does narrow the possibilities, and my opinion would lean toward the 714th Tank Battalion which did serve briefly under Patton from 3/17/45 - 3/23/45 while approaching the Rhine River. The 714th Tank Battalion was an organic (normally assigned to) unit of the 12th Armored Division. If you can find that this is in fact the correct battalion, then your research should include the route of march and locations of the 12th Armored Division as a whole. Including the normal parent unit-the 12th Armored, the 714th TB was also temporary attached to the 70th Infantry Division from 2/12/45 - 2/17/45 only. So you can check that out also. The 714th Tank Battalion spent most of its time asigned to the 7th U.S. Army which was commanded by Lt. Gen. Alexander (Sandy) Patch. The history of the 12th Armored is readily available, such as: _http://www.12tharmoredmuseum.com/_ (http://www.12tharmoredmuseum.com/) This is by far the best site, with searchable database of veterans with their companies and phone numbers. Perhaps one can help you confirm any information. Good Luck, Rick

    3. Fo those researching their ancestors in WW2, there was another paper they had to sign if they were enlisted instead of draftet (not sure if they had to sign it if they were drafted) - it was something with the above name, they signed saying they accepted their service obligation for whatever time is specified. I have Elvis Pressley's that he signed, so I figured since he enlisted instead of getting drafted, then possibly, all the others also had to sign one if they just enlisted. It give his signature and his SN and date of signing. delilah evans

    1. Denis C RIDDLE British Army
    2. Steve Jones
    3. Hi everyone! Hoping someone can help with this. I am helping my cousin's husband who knew very little about his Dad. Dad was Denis Charles RIDDLE born 1919 Camberwell, London, England. He was in Signals in the British Army during WW2 and stationed to the Pacific. He married Kathleen RICKERBY from New Zealand about 1953/4 possibly in Fiji as there son, Denis Charles RIDDLE Jr was born there in Aug 1955. There does not appear to be a marriage in NZ. Denis C RIDDLE Sr's parents were Charles RIDDLE and Nellie Charlotte WALHEN who married 1913 Camberwell. Charles was born 1883 in Rye Sussex and as were previous generations. I am trying to find more information on Denis Charles RIDDLE Sr and his records from WW2 to help fill in the gaps of Knowedge. Can anyone point me in the right direction please. It seems to be your lucky day! There are two places I check first when searching for men who served in the British Armed Forces in WW2. Both sources are on-line, are free to access, and thousands and thousands of names. One is the Debt of Honour Register at http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14 which is run by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Although it only lists people who died, which is not the case here, sometimes you can find previously-unknown members of the family you are researching. The second on-line source is the London Gazette. This was a government newspaper, and it was used to make official announcements. Many of these related to personnel serving in the Armed Forces, and of particular interest are the announcements concerning the commission, promotion and resignation of officers, and the award of decorations and gallantry medals to all ranks. Although you may have no indication he was an officer or was awarded any decoration, it's always worth looking, just in case... The search engine for the on-line London Gazette is at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveSearch.asp?WebType=0&Referer=WW2 and my own tips for searching it are at http://www.military-researcher.com/LGTipsFrameset.html There are at least three announcements in respect of Denis Charles RIDDLE, and they relate to his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals in 1943, the award of the Territorial Efficiency Medal in 1947, and the award of the first clasp to the Territorial Efficiency Medal, also in 1947. ------------------ SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 13 APRIL, 1943 PAGE 1695 <http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveViewFrameSetup.asp?IssueNumber=35977&pageNumber=5&SearchFor=&PageDuplicate=n&selMedalType=&selHonourType=> The undermentioned cadets to be 2nd Lts.: — ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS. 14th Mar. 1943: Denis Charles RIDDLE (267338) ------------------ ------------------ SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 18 APRIL, 1947 PAGE 1710 <http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveViewFrameSetup.asp?IssueNumber=37933&pageNumber=2&SearchFor=&PageDuplicate=n&selMedalType=&selHonourType=> The following Officers are awarded the Efficiency Medal (Territorial): — ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS. Contemporary Army Lists will list him, and will give you the dates of his promotions to Lieutenant and Captain. These may be available at large libraries in Australia. See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=267 and http://www.military-researcher.com/ArmyListSet.html for more information on these books. Now that you have his Personal Number (267338), his rank, his name, and his Corps, there is enough information to apply for his Service Record, which should be in the hands of the Ministry of Defence. It can only be obtained by (or with the written permission of) the serviceman himself or his next of kin. 3. Hi All: The so-called "Brisbane Line" fallback position was a Labour accusation against the previous Australian Menzies government in 1942-43 and was the subject of a Royal Commission, see: http://www.awm.gov.au/encyclopedia/homefront/brisbane_line.htm Yours, John Wilson > In Australia during the darkest points of the War in 1942/43, the Australian Government drew a line through Brisbane in SE Queensland, known logically as the 'Brisbane Line' north of which would be evacuated and left to the Japanese had they ever made landfall in northern Australia. > > I assume the British Government had a similar plan when the Nazis held most of Europe across the Channel. > > Would Brits have been evacuated north into Scotland or west into Wales (ironically like most other defeated races throughout English history)? >

    1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] US Military Awards: Criterea for the Republic of China's World War Two Memorial Medal
    2. Leonard Cizewski
    3. Thanks to Sue for the excellent links regarding Army awards. As I've researched the WW2 ribbons for my late father and father-in-law, I've discovered the incredible chaos and confusion during the demobilization and that some awards weren't established until after they were discharged. I've been trying to clarify criteria for the Republic of China's World War Two Memorial Medal. My father-in-law served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines in World War Two and I am researching his eligibility for medals. Some sources state that it was awarded to individuals only, for example to the pilots of the Flying Tigers. Some sources states that this medal is only for Allied personnel who served in the China-India-Burma Campaign. Some sources state that later the Republic of China awarded it to all Allied personnel who served in the war against Japan. Several nations seemed to have issued "gratitude" awards like this. Some sources state it was awarded only to combat personnel in the war with Japan. Some sources state that the Republic of China awarded to all Allied personnel who served anywhere during World War Two. Some unofficial history sites of Navy ships that served in the war with Japan but never in the China-Burma-India Campaign include name this award among their ship's. One source gives instructions to send a copy of a veterans discharge to Republic of China's Government Information Office (the equivalent of the ROC's consulate after the normalization of relations with the People's Republic) to obtain this medal. I've sent them an email and have received no reply. The links that Sue provided confirm that this would not be an officially recognized foreign award but a private gratitude award to be enjoyed by veterans and their families, like the award France gave to all Normandy veterans on the 50th anniversary. This is all very contradictory and confusing. That I have not been able to find an authoritative, official, and clear statement of criteria like I've found for the French medal for Normandy veterans, suggests that some of what I've found are a continuation of the good faith confusion regarding some awards. As a news point there is something on at the moment about a find of a 50 foot PIPE bomb Somewhere in England which is going to have to be exploded. Its good 'ere i'n it?
