    3. ASTP (The Army Specialized Training Program) was for the relatively high IQ's of the U.S. Army, all of whom were college age (18 to 24). All or almost all of the ASTP students were sent into the infantry when the war got rough in 1944. They sent the highest IQ's into the Infantry where combat would kill or wound at least 99 percent of them (yes, 99 percent!). ------------------------------------ http://www.eece.maine.edu/info/history/ww2.php ----- Original Message ----- From: <INZP@aol.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 05, 2006 4:53 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] U.S. Army - Training for Engineers -Carnegie Institute of ... | Hi Ellis: | | I'm going to contact Carnegie Mellon just on the off chance that they have an | archives librarian and one who, since it's been such a long time, will not be | a stickler on rules since I'm not a member of his immediate family. 3. Here is a website for the USS Thomas Jefferson. I am also giving you the Website for the Liberty Ships. Thoas Jefferson is not listed amoung them. Most, if not all of the Liberty ships were names "SS" not "USS". I'm not sure why this designation, but, while doing research on the SS Hamiton, (Which went down at sea) I was given this information. http://navysite.de/crew.php?action=ship&ship=SSBN_618&squad=false http://www.usmm.org/libertyships.html I hope this helps, Barbara Phillips > [Original Message] > From: Tom Draus <tjdraus@mhtc.net> > To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 5/5/2006 2:31:27 PM > Subject: [WORLD WAR II] ship photo > > Can anyone direct me to a source to obtain a photo of the USS Thomas > Jefferson WWII liberty ship.Tom > > > > ==== WORLDWAR2 Mailing List ==== > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Military:_20th_Century/WORLDWAR2.html > This is the link to our archives. 3. Andrienne, if he transferred credits from CIT, now Carnegie Mellon University, I think it is safe to assume that he was in their ASTP Unit. Carnegie Mellon may be able to tell you if he attended in that time frame. His Army Record would be the real source of information. I did not know him. When I was in the STAR Unit at Pasadena Junior College, the shipment before mine went to CIT. As a Pittsburgh, PA native I was more than slightly upset. Ellis Hosbach Bethel Park, PA

    3. Adrienne, ASTP = Army Specialized Training Program. It was a program, available to qualified applicants, for study in the fields of Medicine, Engineering and Psychology at the University level. Colleges and Universities were selected by the Army. Each unit was identified by a four digit number. Those accepted were sent first to a Star Unit for further testing and classification and then sent to the appropriate school. I was sent to University of San Francisco in the Engineering Program. The Program started in mid 1943 and ended in late spring of 1944 when replacements were need for the fighting units. Credits earned were transferable.
