    2. Jocelyn: The first thing is to get as much information as possible from your father, which may require repetitive questioning of him to bring out bits of info locked away in his memory. Second, there is a WW 1 message board that may help. Third, contact me off list for further possible help. Hunter George

    1. Looking for daughter of US Soldier in England WWI
    2. Jocelyn
    3. Hi Everyone! I recently found out that my father's uncle- Juan Hernandez Guzman, had a daughter while serving in the ARMY during WW1 -and stationed in England. The family did not keep in touch with her because his wife did not allow it. They are since dead and the rest of the family would be interested in finding out about her. My father remembers his gradnmother showing him a phot of the girl a long time ago, but that's about all the knowledge we have a bout her. We do not know her name or what town/area in England they lived in. I know it's probably impossible to find her, but I am wondering if there is some sort of list or forum that has information on the soldiers and/or an organization that lists children of soldiers from this time. Juan was Puerto Rican, but we do not know if he was drafted in PR or in NYC where he lived most of his life there after. He later changed his name to "Johnny" Hernandez. Any help would be appreciated. Date of Death: 23/06/1944 Service No: 874443 Walter Cowles was killed in Asia and is buried in the Taukkyan War Cemetery in Burma. I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me where he would have been stationed at that time. Would he have been in Burma or did they bring the soldiers bodies there to be buried that had been killed in other places in the east. Carol Lylyk Calgary Alberta Canada

    1. Re: [WORLD WAR II] Camp Rucker, Camp Indiantown Gap, Carlisle, PA +ASTP +USS ...
    2. Thanks for the information about Camp Rucker. I think he meant SS America but of course I'm not sure. Unfortunately, according to the web site "1944 Troop Ship Crossings" -- "The records of ships used to carry troops to their theaters of operations were destroyed intentionally in 1951. "According to our [U. S. National Archives] records, in 1951 the Department of the Army destroyed all passenger lists, manifests, logs of vessels, and troop movement files of United States Army Transports for World War II." (... no word on why the records were destroyed.) Thus there is no longer an official record of who sailed on what ship..." Information on this web site is from veterans who crossed on these troop ships. If someone knows of another website where I could check to see if the SS America left Boston in August of 1944 for Liverpool I'd welcome the information. Thanks for answering my note. Adrienne

    3. I am seeking information regarding Ann L Burnham and her daughter Nancy. Ann was a Sergeant in the US army in WW2, she died in 1986 and is buried at Calverton Vet Cemetery. She married Staff Sergeant Arnold S Burnham from Rouses Point NY around 1944-45 either in England or in Europe, Arnold died in 1988 son of Georgiana Burnham nee Duquette. I am trying to trace Nancy or her family, I do not have a married name for Nancy Burnham. Ann was from West Babylon Suffolk County, the family moved to Grand Street in Albany NY, Arnold worked at the Albany Medical Centre there after discharge from the army. I would appreciate any help please in relation to Ann's maiden name. Sincerely Janice Wales UK

    3. There is not a specific date on which ASTP ended. It was introduced in February 1942. On February 10, 1944, Army Chief of Staff, General of the Army George C. Marshall, issued a memo recommending the dissolution of the Program. It started almost overnight. The complement of 150,000 men was to be reduced to 30,000 by April 30, 1944. He tells the story that a pub the airman frequented in the area was out of bounds either 1942 or 1943 because a murder had happened. It was either at Hill's Hotel or Housell Bay Hotel. It was the subject of a series of murder documentaries by a local television station several years ago. Has anyone any information please?

    3. Capr Rucker is now Fort Rucker in South Alabama, they train the helicopter pilots, among other things. When a luxury liner was taken and used to ferry troops, it was not names a 'USS', it would of been just 'SS' or "HMS", so if you looking for a ship that was previoulsy a liner, it still would be 'SS ?' the first SS Mary and SS Elizabeth were both taken and used for troops.
