Thanks Tom, that is where I got the information I posted earlier. Ellis Hosbach Bethel Park, PA
The best place to go for information on the 1973 fire is the horses mouth; NARA itself. Find out about the loss, and their efforts to recover from the loss. http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/fire-1973.html See the NARA homepage at http://www.archives.gov for more FAQs. Thank you for the information on the date of destruction of records. Perhaps that will give a lead on further insight on the reason. What ever the reason , thanks to all who contribute to the website and to the assistance of the people at NARA , we will find answers to our questions. I do know that for information on returning troops to New York , the Associated Press in post VE day periods did post names of ship arrivals giving the name of the ship and the numbers of service men aboard. These snippets appeared in many local papers so if the date of return is known , a check of a newspaper for that week might give the name of the ship. In my case , it worked. These AP dispatches did not, however give names of service men. Thanks to everyone who contributes information on questions to this list. Every bit of knowledge submitted helps stitch together our records. Jessie, CA
Jessie, Apropos of your last, we in Australia seem to be lucky, or blessed, with archivists who have retained service records from both WW1 & WW2. Our War Museum & National Archives have and still do a wonderful job in that respect. It seems that the lack of computers has helped our cause. I have photo copies of service records of family members in both wars - from Attestation (at the entry to the service), to Service and Casualty, then Demobilization forms, (including in S & C forms the handwritten originals plus the later typed confirmation copies) . Interestingly the forms and procedures are identical for both wars. The financial records are different - I don't know that they were kept, each serviceman had a pay-book where records were maintained. Regards, from Sydney, Dave - I suspect an even more ancient, failed, computer programmer from Fortran 4 days. Rhonda, This is very useful information, Thank you. But sad too. With a fire that destroyed one set of records and this, it makes it very difficult to find information on our families. There is hardly anything I can find on my Mothers Brother, it's all gone. What little we had went when my Aunts house blew up from a bad propane tank. Everythng is dust. At least I have a picture of my Uncle in Uniform. I was told by The Department of the Army that the big fire destroyed Ship Records, Troop Records, and many other kinds of Records. The fire ahppened where everything was in storage. It looks like they were filed alphabetically and by discharge date. So it doesn't mater what they were or what service they were in. Barbara Phillips PS I pasted in a note below that was posted earlier today. This note posted by: Ellis Hosbach earlier today. "The fire which destroyed approximately 16-18 million Official Military Personnel Files was on July 12, 1973 at the Records Center in St. Louis. Personnel and Period Affected was Army Personnel discharged November 1, 1912 to January 1, 1960 [approximately 80% destroyed] and Air Force Personnel discharged September 25, 1947 to January 1, 1964 with names alphabetically after Hubbard, James E. [approximately 75% destroyed]. Ellis: I agree about the fire in St Louis but did that fire also destroy the troop ship records , etc? If not , when were those records destroyed? Jessie, CA
Hello Adrienne, Found a bit more on the SS America : From http://members.tripod.com/~lch4/ssam.html (There is also a photo of the ship in neutral (pre Dec '41) colours on the page). "The SS America isn't mentioned very much anymore. She seems to be overshadowed by her baby sister United States America, though has had an exciting and eventful life. Launched the day before World War II started. America entered the James River from Newport News Shipbuilding on August 31, 1939. With Europe engulfed in war, the America turned to other neutral ports to call on (as the United States was a neutral nation until December 8, 1941). When Japan visited Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 America along with thousands of men where called to action. Under control of the United States Navy America now the USS Westpoint was a troop transport vessel. She sailed the world bringing the men from Australia and New Zealand to the European theatre of action. Westpoint/America survived several attacks by the Japanese and delivered all her troops safely to their destinations" You wondered about the confusion with the transport ship's names. In the process of boarding a ship it would be easy to accept whatever one was told. If the information came from a crew member the ship's old name could have been used, or maybe just a slip of the memory. It is only a week since I found out the names of the four troopships I sailed in during WW2. The only one I thought that I knew I had got wrong. Here is what it says about destroying the troop ship records on this website http://troopships.pier90.org/crossings/1945.htm "The records of ships used to carry troops to their theaters of operations were destroyed intentionally in 1951. "According to our [U. S. National Archives] records, in 1951 the Department of the Army destroyed all passenger lists, manifests, logs of vessels, and troop movement files of United States Army Transports for World War II." (Sorry, but there was no word on why the records were destroyed.) Thus there is no longer an official record of who sailed on what ship, though there are still valuable sources that can be found. So this web page is an informal collecting ground for information about troop ship crossings." Did you hear about the WW2 submarine that they found - I believe it must of been close to Thialand as the fishermen were claiming about losing their lines because they were getting caught on something, when the divers went down, it was a US submarine that had dissappeared 62 years ago. delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Phillips" <bphil1@earthlink.net> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 22, 2006 1:37 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Service Records. | Something that we are also dealing with is the fact that there was a fire | in DC that destroyed many records. http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/pearlharbor/ This issue from National Geographic has a lot of pics and info on Pearl Harbor.
Anyone have a Jean Mercedes Salzer in their research on the war. There is a photo of her on another site. delilah
We in the States are muddling along trying to overcome the wonderful idea of a Congressman from my home district who thought that the government would be better off if it didn't retain "useless" records about WW2 and convinced the powers that be to destroy them. I have no idea of what was destroyed and what was retained , but as each of us who are trying to piece together from bits and pieces of service records kept by our service men share information , perhaps we may be able to help each other. Jessie, Calif
I doubt the government still has these. They would be warped from humidity and I doubt if there are any machines around that could actually read them. They may have put them on tape (as many companies did) but even the tapes would be old - may not have many tape drives around. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Delilah" <diamond6468@mindspring.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 22, 2006 11:44 AM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Camp Rucker, Camp Indiantown Gap, Carlisle, PA +ASTP +USS ... > Those are the cards I am speaking of, I was one of the 'keypunch' > operators - its amazing that didn't last long when the computer came > along - > I think the pay records are also there, I will have to check and see - > delilah > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <JbarL@aol.com> > To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2006 9:48 PM > Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Camp Rucker, Camp Indiantown Gap, Carlisle, PA > +ASTP +USS ... > > > | In the dark ages before modern computers we used keypunch cards and card > | readers to collect data and to input data into main frame > computers......if the > | government still has the data on "hollerith " cards all is not lost. > | > | I wonder if anyone knows whether the financial records of the individual > | service men are still in existence and if so, how does one access them? > | > | Jessie , Calif A very ancient computer programmer > | > | > | ==== WORLDWAR2 Mailing List ==== > | We are an international list! Those are the cards I am speaking of, I was one of the 'keypunch' operators - its amazing that didn't last long when the computer came along - I think the pay records are also there, I will have to check and see - delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: <JbarL@aol.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2006 9:48 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Camp Rucker, Camp Indiantown Gap, Carlisle, PA +ASTP +USS ... | In the dark ages before modern computers we used keypunch cards and card | readers to collect data and to input data into main frame computers......if the | government still has the data on "hollerith " cards all is not lost. | | I wonder if anyone knows whether the financial records of the individual | service men are still in existence and if so, how does one access them? | | Jessie , Calif A very ancient computer programmer | | | ==== WORLDWAR2 Mailing List ==== | We are an international list!
