Is there anywhere on the web or otherwise that I can find out a discharge date for my uncle, Oda Hart?
You can get a copy at www.NARA.gov IF they have one. Better try his local county court house first. Most were recorded there. Is there a record or records somewhere giving arrival dates of U.S. troops in England, Liverpool to be exact, sometime around August 12-16, 1944? Also, would anyone know to which camps these troops were assigned. I was told that after arriving in Liverpool troops were placed on trains and my friend was sent to a camp south of London, somewhere in the countryside. He didn't give me the name but said there was a large estate located nearby with a wall around it. Where would I begin research to find out which towns or areas had U.S. troops encamped nearby? I realize the description is vague but that's all I have to go on. Thank you, Adrienne Inman
I don't know about that form, but do you know which branch of the service? What is his name? Do you know if he was fighting in Europe or someplace like Iwa Jima? You can alway write a letter to the department of the Army or Navy, or Marine Corp. That's all I did for my Father, and I didn't have to fill out any forms. Post all his info on the list and I am sure some one will know where to send you, or might even have information on him. There are also many WWII websites including the WWII memorial, that if your Brother in laws name isn't there you can add it. I have added my Father and 2 Uncles. This was taken from the site on the Hamilton, so a report was made on the personnel lost, if there is a report, you should be able to get a copy of that report. There is a partial list of names on the site but some of the letters I cannot get to come up, that may be a fault with the site. I have written to the webmaster to ask if it can be fixed. So now if I wanted a copy of that report, I would check NARA first, then check with the Dept of the Army. Also for everybody's information, everything prior to 1956 (I believe that year is correct) has been declassfied. ** SS Paul Hamilton Personnel Lost at Sea - 20 Apr 1944 ** This roster was complied by the Casualty Branch, the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, DC - List No. 62 to document the "Personnel Lost at Sea as Result of Ship Sinking During World War II of the Liberty Ship SS Paul Hamilton (Hull No. 0227) off the coast of Algiers, North Africa on 20 Apr 1944 Sources - Abbreviations (1) Report of Proceedings of a Board of Officers, Headquarters, 9107 TSU-QMC, American Graves Registration Service, Mediterranean Zone, Rome, Italy, on 17 Jun 1949. Board Members: Major Townsend C. Anderson (O-30195), Major William D. Kirkpatrick (O-419138), Captain Samuel F. Fritz (O-410379), Captain Carroll A. Pinner (O-1736493), Captain Richard H. Tuttle (O-56893), First Lieutenant Carl Hunter (O-1322854), and First Lieutenant Anthony J. Daniels (O-420501). Approved 10 Jun 1949 by Colonel Whitfield W. Watson.
I made a document of the names thru the letter "J", the rest of the letters would not come up as a page - if you want to see these other names, let me know. delilah
The military kept all kinds of different records on their personnel, one is called the "Individual Deceased Personnel Files" (IDPF) - anyone can get the IDPF on any deceased military under FOIA - there are different bits of information in each file according to the circumstances of the the deceased and how they died. There is a web site where you can fill out the form and mail it in, they do charge, you can ask to have this charge waived, maybe they will if you are related, I know they did not for me, although I have not paid them, the government is not allowed to make money off its records, so they call it "research, copy, etc. fees". The info below is from the web site: World War II Casualty Files "If you would like to find information on any World War II casualty, you can order a copy of the "Individual Deceased Personnel 293 File" (IDPF/293) from U.S. Total Army Personnel Command Center. There are IDPF/293 files for EVERY World War II casualty, ALL branches, i.e., U.S. Army, U.S. Army Air Corps, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. For information related to Merchant Marine Casualties during World War II, contact the U.S. Coast Guard." This site has a form you can print out/fill out and copy and mail, and it does say it takesa while. Now according to the letter I got when I requested copies of the deceased on a research project on a downed aircraft, they told me they only had resources to searhfor 10 files at a time, some of the files may of had as many as 50-60 pages. http://www.geocities.com/lks_friday/HAMILTON-005.htm The address I sent to is different than the one on the web site, mine went to 200 Stovall Street, Alexandria, Va., 22332-0404, but it has beeen a couple of years, so you may want to use the one on the site - also include your e-mail address, as when I requested the copies I got, I forgot to send the names (OK so I am old and forgetful) so the person e-mailed me and the rest was handled thru e-mail. Also the person I dealt with was a Thomas M. Jones, Chief, Freedom of Information and Privacy Act Office, ARMY HUMAN RESOURCES COMMAND. Like I said they will bill you when they send the records. Some of the info I received was about the person, the letter of notification to the listed next of kin, how much pay he/her was entitled and lots of other stuff. Hope this helps, if it does, let me know, I like to know if what I do helps anybody. delilah evans
I have records on my father from the Marine Corps for 1946. It appears that he was in "M" btry. 4th battalion, 11th Marine Force. Went to China and returned from there on the ship USS General H.W. Barbara, You might check the County Courthouse. When discharged, U. S. veterans were encouraged to have their documents recorded, and many did. Also, your local Veteran Service Officer may have some documents available. I salute your uncle's service and wish you success in your research.
