Rick: He was with the Army. He was assigned to the 320th Combat Engineers, Company C, 95th Division. He left the U.S. on Aug. 9, 1944 on the West Point (formerly the America) and arrived in Liverpool approximately 4 days later? I have another piece of information that states he was with the 2nd armored Division, Company "C" 17th Armored Engineering Battalion. Is this conflicting information? Please forgive my ignorance but I don't know where to research the station and/or troop list for his unit or next senior unit of assignment/attachment because unfortunately I don't know which of the above is a "unit." If you could possibly point me in the right direction I'll do my best to take it from there. Thank you so much for answering my query. Everyone on this board has been extremely helpful and I do appreciate the amount of time spent answering my questions. Adrienne
Many thanks to all the veterans. Sherry
Adrienne, First, assuming you know your friends' branch of service, but I believe it's safe to assume U.S. Army. If you know his unit of assignment at the time of his arrival (Example: 38th Inf Regiment), simply research the station and/or troop list for that unit or next senior unit of assignment/attachment. You will have to determine whether it is an Army Air Corps or not, but post his unit on this board and that can be quickly answered. After that, it will involve some time but again, this board can help you with his order of battle. When you have established that, the station /troop list will be relatively easy to find and should give you the town or area they were stationed and for how long. Rick

Dave, All you need to do is to search the list of Federal Repositories and go to the nearest Library which will have copies of Officer's Registers. You will not be able to check out the books due to their historical value, however you will be able to request access and utilize for a few hours within the library. Rick

Adrienne I also found this page with all of the 1944 Troop Ship crossings from the US with sources of the information, I knew I had seen it somewhere. http://troopships.pier90.org/crossings/1944b.htm it also outlines how the records of ships used to carry troops to their theatres of operations, were destroyed intentionally in 1951. In a message dated 5/24/2006 11:04:10 A.M. Central Daylight Time, dudley.clist@btinternet.com writes: http://home.freeuk.net/rmarg/data/statnumbers.htm Hi Janice: Thank you for the web sites. I've seen the troop ships records and I do know that he was on the America which became the West Point. I also looked at the other site unfortunately my grasp of geography plus the sheer numbers of camps is daunting. Possibly there were newspapers in London that kept track of these ships as they arrived? Of course that could have been censored information. If anyone is able to give me a starting point for research I can take it from there. Also, would most troop ships have left from Liverpool on their way to France? Thank you for taking the time to answer my query. I appreciate your help. Adrienne
