If you call the Department of VA Affairs at 800-827-1000, the folks there are extremely helpful. They gave me the address in which to write for my uncles medical records and he was killed in WWII. Call them first, because they told me that depending on the branch of the service, the last name of the individual and other factors, records are kept in different places. I was originally told that my Uncles records were destroyed, and it turns out that they are in Dayton, Ohio. It is very hard to get through on the phone, I spent a half hour re dialing. But, it was well worth my time. Be sure you have any needed information in front of you. His name Social Security # or Service #. These folks will also give you information on how to receive any lost medals and awards (This is a one time deal). Again, it is a very time consuming project, but well worth your time. I am not sure that law applies to this situation, I believe that the V.A. would have his records the same as his military records - fill out the SF180 and send it in, it has a place for medical records delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: "BJ Whitsitt" <folkie@insightbb.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 17, 2006 9:02 PM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] medical records | Marcia, | The new HIPAA laws protect the medical records of the dead just as those of the living are protected. Thank you. Now I know why I haven't heard anything back about the Marine album. Sherry
Mr Leonard I did not intend to imply that the US Army and the Marines trained together, so sorry that I apparently did not make myself perfectly clear. I have a Marine Basic Training album and an Army Basic Training album. One from Parris Island< Marines> and one from Fort Chaffee Arkansas <Army> The Fort Chaffee album has "E" Battery 2nd Battalion on the front. I had placed the Division and platoon information about the Marine album on a website but have not heard anything back. So I wondered if perhaps they did not go on together and if they did not would the Army guys be split up also. Sherry
THANK YOU . That should help me find the semi trailer picture. Jessie
On the Run - After the order to surrender in Battle of Crete by times 2006-April-27 When the order to surrender was given after the Battle of Crete in 1941, more than 6000 Australian, British and New Zealand soldiers were left behind. Some escaped immediately on abandoned naval barges or took to the hills. But the majority was marched back over the White Mountains to makeshift POW camps. Many escaped, relying on Cretan mountain villagers to shelter and guide them. Ian Frazer's father was a survivor of the Battle of Crete, an Australian soldier who successfully evaded the Nazi occupiers for a year. He kept a meticulous diary. ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Smith" <airforce@localdial.com> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 17, 2006 6:06 AM Subject: Re: [WORLD WAR II] Prisoners of War Crete | Crete being in the Mediterranean, fell to the Germans in July 1941 which is | before the Americans entered the war so it would be only British forces on | the Island. | These prisoners would almost certainly be taken to Germany and accomadated | in the Stalags. Hi: On an individual basis it may help you to contact the red cross website:http://www.icrc.org The mail address is: ICRC Archives 19 Avenue de la Paix 1202 Geneva., Switzerland My book on SA air activities in this area date from March 1943 onwards so unfortunately I can't help with this source. Those Allies taken prisoner in North Africa in 1941 were shipped to Italy. At a later stage they were taken by rail to various prisoners of war camps in Germany. In your case I would think the army infantry were probably taken from Crete by caique, siebel ferry or some other form of sea transport to Greece & then by rail through Yugoslavia either to Austria, Italy or maybe Germany (which was further distant). I have Nephews that are currently serving our Country. They started out in the Corp and after many years as Marines they are now both in the Air Force. They have both told me that all of the services have their own basic training. Even after serving as a Marine they both had to go through some basic training for the Air Force. Each branch of the service has different jobs and obligations, so their training msy as a matter of need be different. There is a database of WW2 POW's on NARA - it will tell you where/which camp he/she went to but I doubt it will tell 'how they were treated' - there is a project called "Voices of War", the Library of Congress has books on actual accounts of those that served and those that helped on the 'home front'. I would encourage anyone who was in or had someone in, that you tell their story, let our future hear from our past, let us not forget! If you send me a name (if you are hunting for anyone in particular), I will see if I can find the camp. ----- Original Message ----- From: "roger baldwin" <pamela.roger@optusnet.com.au> To: <WORLDWAR2-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 16, 2006 10:30 PM Subject: [WORLD WAR II] Prisoners of War Crete | Hello List, | I would like to find out where the infantry who fought on Crete were | kept as prisoners of war and the conditions of the camp. | Does anyone know where I could find this information on the net. | | Regards, Pamela. | | | ==== WORLDWAR2 Mailing List ==== | http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Military:_20th_Century/WORLDWAR2.html | This is the link to our archives.
