    2. Thanks for the responses to my question. Didn't think that there could be so many 1sts, and those didn't include the 1st shot down over England! Forrest, I would be most grateful for the photos, in my picture its just the guards. Regards, Mick.

For instance, the "1st German aircraft shot down in WW2" seems to have crashed quite far out in the North Sea, after being shot down by a naval pilot! The following claims are taken from a variety of books: First German aircraft to fall to British guns and/or first German aircraft to be shot down by any British aircraft - 25 or 26 Sep 1939 (depending on source) when a Dornier 18 flying boat was brought down into the sea by a Sea Skua of 803 Sqn Fleet Air Arm. First enemy attack, and first attack on ships of the Royal Navy - 26 Sep when a Junkers 88 carried out an attack on the Home Fleet in the North Sea during the recovery of HM Submarine Spearfish. First shots in the air war over Britain, and first British pilot to go into action against the Luftwaffe in a Spitfire - Flg Off Pinkerton of 602 Sqn against a photo-recce Heinkel at about 1021hrs on 16 Oct 1939. First air attack on the British Isles - 1435hrs on 16 Oct 1939, when a German bomber dropped two bombs during an attack on two cruisers near the Forth Bridge. First enemy aircraft brought down over Britain - early afternoon of 16 Oct 1939, after the above attack, when two German Junkers 88s or Heinkels (depending on source) were brought down in the Firth of Forth by Spitfires from 602 and 603 Squadrons. First enemy aircraft to crash on British soil - About 1022hrs on 28 Oct 1939, when a photo-recce Heinkel 111 was brought down on a hillside at Kidlaw Hill, near Humbie, East Lothian, after damage by a shell from a ship in the Firth of Forth, and then attack by Spitfires from 602 and 603 Sqns. As this last encounter was the first downing of a German aircraft on British soil, it's likely that this is the one he was guarding. You say you have a photo of him with the rest of the guards, but is the German aircraft in the picture as well? I have several photographs of the "Humbie Heinkel", some with crowds of onlookers, and can send you some to compare with your photo, if you wish. Forrest -- Forrest Anderson, Edinburgh, Scotland. 3. Hi All: A Death Certificate from a "Service Department's Register" may not have as much information as an ordinary English Death Certificate, and Diane may have to search for a notice of his death in the local papers (Stockton area) which will probably mention his parents, to confirm that the 1944 death is the right one. He is on the Misc. fiche F266 for Army OR (Other Ranks), WWII: Thomas W. PATTERSON Spr RE 14252136 - 1944, vol 10 p 282 The Miscellaneous fiche (c1000+) have Overseas BDM, and also Army BDM in the Army Chaplains and Regimental seris. While the Army Chaplains BDM are overseas, the Regimental births have quite a few in Britain eg Aldershot & Woolwich. NB: no Navy or Air Force equivalents. When I got an English Death Certificate for a 1900 Boer War death, it just had Surname & Initial plus Date & Place of Death. No Age or Parents. This one did not even have a Regimental Number. Yours, John Wilson PS: Scan avaliable of the Certificate for Fox if you email me off-list. It is headed "Casualty Lists of the Natal and South Africa Field Forces 1899-1902, Brabant's Horse, 1st Regiment": Regimental No - blank Rank - Trooper Name - FOX, J Casualty - Killled Place - Vaalkoop Date - 23 Aug 1900 Remarks - blank Issued under the Births, Deaths and Marriages (Special Provisions) Act 1957. The bottom says "Certified to be a true copy of the certified copy of an entry made in a Service Departments Register, Given at the General Register Office ..." etc. with seal of GRO, England. NB: New Zealand WWII (& earlier ie WWI, Boer War) Services personnel records are avaliable to anyone if the serviceman or servicewomen has died. No restrictions to next of kin only (Britain) or death plus 20 years (Canada). > Hi Diane, > Did your search include the GRO WAR DEATHS ARMY OTHER RANKS > (1939 to 1948) index ? > > > Hi All: > > > > I'm new to this list and hope someone can help. > > > > My late dad's brother was born in Stockton in 1922. 3. The first German aircraft shot down was by a 603 Squadron spitfire over East Lothian after an attack on the Forth Bridge and the ships at anchor at Rosyth dockyard. The second was by 602 Squadron in the same incident being shot down by the famous Archie McKellar. Google 603 squadron and Forth Bridge October 1939 or 1st air raid. I did one time request his military records but they did not have copies of the files because of a fire but I know that my father was in the veteran's hospital in Louisville and they had his file there and this was after the fire was suppose to have occurred. Not familiar with the form if you could just point me in the right direction I appreciate it. 3. Good evening list, I just want to say thank you to all of you who have helped me in researching my Uncle Gerald who was killed in WWII. Because of all of your wonderful information, I will now be receiving all of his records as well as the "Report of Casualty Letter" that would have been given to my grandmother at the time he was listed as MIA. I spent 3 hours on the phone today with the VA, but, I have walked away with the knowledge that I will be receiving all of his records. You have all been a great help and the folks with the VA are wonderful. Just an additional FYI.... We can also have an additional Memorial at the National Cemitery of our choice. He is currently Memorialized in North Africa, but they will also put a Memorial marker at the Riverside National Cemetery, at no cost to the family. Thank you all once again, Barbara Ann Phillips bphil1@earthlink.net
