    3. Walter, Looks like you are on the right track. I didn't have that Thomas Box Wooten was a Col. Yes, Robert D. Wooten was a confederate veteran. You may be right that Bettie Maultsby is a corruption of Elizabeth Morphis, but I'm quite sure he was married to Elizabeth Morphis. From the 1850 Cumberland Co census: Robert (age 35) Constable Elizabeth 30 wife John W. 6 Son Sabrina T. 3 Dau Mary E. 8/12 Dau Ellen Morphis 17 sister in law. I don't have anything from further census records on this family. In regards to family of James M. Wooten, most of the information we have is from two articles that appeared in the "Lenoir County Heritage Book" about his son, James Singletary Wooten Sr. (Articles 829A and 829B). In these articles it states that Josie Ann Bryan Wooten was the daughter of Joseph W. Bryan (c1820 - c 1844) and Charlotte Elizabeth Oliver Bryan (19 Jan 1824 - 21 June 1889). So I don't know where the surname Thomas comes from, unless it was a first marriage of Josie, and her marriage to James Monroe Wooten was actually her second marriage. The Bryans were from Louisburg. There is an additional daughter, Maud Bryan Wooten mentioned in the article. Jennifer Bell -----Original Message----- From: Walter Palmer <[email protected]> To: Charles, Jennifer and Michael Bell <[email protected]>; [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, March 24, 1998 13:23 Subject: Thomas Box Wooten Jennifer, I just found some Wooten info taken from "Family Names" July 1985. I don't know what kind of magazine this is. . i just copied the sheets from the library. Captain Robert D. Wooten (Confederate Veteran) Son of Col. Tom [Box] Wooten, grandson of Ensign Shadrack Wooten. Cumberland County, moved to Lenior County about beginning of Civil War. Married Miss Bettie Maultsby Children - John, Robert A., Jr., sons; Lina, Mary, Joe daughters. [I thought Robert married Elizabeth Morphis, or is it possible that Bettie Maultsby is a really messed up spelling of it] James M. Wooten Brother of Capt. Robert Wooten, same parentage. Moved from Cumberland to Lenoir County, year 1853-4. Married Miss Josie Thomas, Louisburg Children -- James and will, sons; Daughters -- Mabell, Josie, Estelle. [I had his wife as Josie Bryan, maybe it was her second marriage] Anyway, just thought this might be of help. Let me know what you think as it is validity. Walter Palmer -- descendent of Shadrack Wooten and Elizabeth Treadwell, through their son John Allen Wooten.
