I apologize if I am on the list wrongly, but I am trying to jump a name change in my family. My great great grandfather was A. B. Ewton (Albin Buchanan) of Dunlap, Tennessee. I was told that he was an Irishman with flaming red hair and a "matching" temper. No one has been able to prove our lineage past him. One researcher says that A. B. Ewton was really A. B. Wooten and that his mother was Rebecca Wooten. The source indicated that the name change came between 1830-1840. There is an Albert Wooten listed in Bledsoe County, Tennessee who is the right age to be A. B. Ewton. The family members listed are also the same age as his family. He is apparently also listed in the same period as A. B. or Albin Ewton in the deed books which this person has researched, but I have not seen. He is also listed in court records in 1836 as A. B. Wootson. In the 1830 census of Marion county, Tennessee there is a Rebecca Wooton listed as head of household. The family members listed are the right sex and age range to be the siblings of and A. B. Ewton. A Fannie Ewton Smith remembers a Roy Wooten telling her that her maiden name should be Wooten. His son, Roy (Buster) Wooten had a business in Jasper, Tennessee in 1988. The researcher (whose name I don't know without consulting a family member who send me copies of his work) said he visited this man in 1988 and Buster Wooten told him the Frank Ewton had told him that the family name had been Wooten. This Frank Ewton was said to be F. P. Ewton who later became the casket maker and farmer in Dunlap, Tennessee and was my great great uncle. By the way, in the 1830 census, Rebecca Wooten is listed as between ages 40 and 50 which would put her birthday between 1780-1790 (if my math is correct!) :-) This person proposes that she was born in Kentucky, but I have been unable to find census records to verify that. A Sequatchie county, Tennessee history book said that most of the residents of Sequatchie county came from North Carolina and the areas around there. Sequatchie and Dunlap are on the Georgia border near the Smokie Mountains. If any of these names is familiar to anyone, I would be deeply grateful for any information that could be shared. If I cannot establish a viable connection, I will quit the list, since I am unable to meaningfully contribute without a "real" Wooten connection. Thanks again for your time. Rev.
