Ancestry Database: Description: The First Census of the United States in 1790 comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. The total population of the United States in 1790 as derived from the schedules was 3,231,533. The only names appearing upon the schedules, however, were those of heads of families, and at the time, families averaged 6 persons, making the number approximately 540,000 or slightly more than half a million.
