There are courthouse and cemetery records of at least one family of Wootens in Sumter Co. AL in 1800s. Search of courthouse records would probably provide relationships of these Wootens to others. However, we can tell from cemetery records that a Richard Wooten married Mary Martha Malvina Arrington, daughter of General Joseph & Mary J. Arrington, prominent Sumter Countians of the time. A child of this marriage, Joseph Richard Wooten, is buried in a marked grave with the tombstone inscription, "Son Richard & Malvina Wooten, Mar 22, 1862 - Nov 7, 1915". The only other marked grave has a stone inscribed, "Mary Martha Malvina Wooten, Dau Gen Joseph & Mary J. Arrington, Aug 3, 1820 - Mar 30, 1862". >From these dates, one can justifiably conclude that Malvina died a few days after giving birth to her son, Joseph Richard. Joe Stegall Demopolis, AL
