    3. Hello, The following is a quote from a text that I recently purchased. Any assistance on clarification of this information would be appreciated. Please respond to the list. Austin, Jeannette Holland. (1998, reprint from 1984 ed.). "THE GEORGIANS, GENEALOGIES OF PIONEER SETTLERS," page 409-410: "Thomas Wootten, son of Benjamin Wootten and Elizabeth Rousseau, dau. of Hellare Rousseau and Elizabeth Lynton; Benjamin b. Mary Ann Wootten, b. 6/28/1770, m. 3/1789 James Cade." {end of quote} [*I am including this next paragraph only because it is in this reference. I do not agree with this belief that the Wooten family descended from this Thomas Wootten, surgeon with John Smith. A simple encyclopedia search will show that it would have almost been impossible for the Wootten gentleman with Capt. John Smith to have fathered our family. I do have a study by Richard Wooten that explores this myth and will be glad to send it to any of our researchers upon request. I am also aware that a work by Preston in 1948, also uses this reference to conclude the origins of our family. My records indicate that this Thomas Wooten, who married E. Rousseau, is a descendant of Richard Wooten and his wife, Joyce, not of Thomas Wootten, born in 1585 in England. Martha] {Quote from same source} "Benjamin Wootten, father of Thomas Wootten, Sr., b. York Co., VA m. Elizabeth Rousseau, was a son of Dr. Thomas Wootten, physician, [source] "First Republic of America," p. 28, by Alexander Brown, states that De. Thomas Wootten, gentleman, was one of Capt. John Smith's exploring expedition which left Jamestown May 31, 1607. He was the first doctor of medicine in America, and was the fifth son of Sheriff Thomas Wootten of Kent." "Benjamin Wootten had sons: Benjamin; Thomas b. England 1585, d. VA 1669, Isle of Wight Co., VA, names his wife, Sarah, and son, Richard, and wife's son, Thomas Wood; Richard, who received a land grant in Isle of Wight Co., GA [should be VA] 1643, d. 1687, his LWT pvd 9/28/1687m. naming sons, Richard and Thomas; Thomas, b. 1651 Isle of Wight Co., VA, lived in York Co., VA, m. Priscilla and has a son, Benjamin." {end of quote} [This last paragraph is a perfect example of limited research and wrong conclusions. This source seems to combine families and draw erroneous conclusions. It is easy to see why we need to cite sources and always seek additional sources to prove or disprove our information.] In my files the ancestors of Thomas Wootten, son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Rousseau are: a.
